During our building entry training I took a shot that the gunny seemed rather surprised I took. They had just drilled into our heads " Never!!! Never!!! Never, give up your weapon!!!" The scenario. I enter the room, bad guy has woman pulled in close and by the throat pointing his weapon at me. Screaming over and over for me to drop my weapon. I took the shot, the hole in his forehead said, I win bad guy lost. Would I take that same shot if it were my wife?? ??

By the way, did your paper targets talk or did you actually kill some guy in training? Were they volunteers?

That shot I took was 30 years ago. We qualified every quarter in night shoots, combat shoots, and the generic qualification shoots. Basically every month we had a shooting qual due. It's been a bout 10 years since I shot IDPA.

You're making me think I need to get back to the range a little more frequently. If I have to take that shot again but it's my wife or grandson I damn well better not miss.

I've had the wife for over 30 years, gotten used to her.

The truth is I was very confident in my shooting skills back then. I'm still confident in my basic shooting skills, but lack the proficiency I used to have. You know what perishable skills are, and accuracy wanes with time.

When my Father taught me how to use firearms he told me that the difference between winning a losing a gun fight is the little section of time when you slow down and hit your target in the kill zone.
