Maybe the problem is the operator.

Use this document to find out how to enable printing for the HP Color LaserJet 3500, 3550, and 3600 Printers in Windows 10 or Windows 8.1/8.

Typical drug dealer M.O. First sample is free, if you return for more be prepared to give them every penny you have.
I bought my first PC, an "IBM clone," in 1992. The box, a 5,000-pound monitor, keyboard, and mouse was $2,000.

At some point later that year I bought a pin printer; it was, as I recall, $200. I don't think there was any other type available. It would only print B&W text, no images, but it worked great, no issues with it.

The proper way to dispose of them, you know, is with a 12 gauge.

I've got a Brother color laser that's given me very little trouble. A couple of times, it lost connection with the computer, but easily enough resolved.

Works great, and the toner cartridges last a pretty long time!

The other option would be to install an older version of Windows as a virtual machine, then print from that. Yeah it would not be ideal, but at least you will still be able to use the printer until it actually dies.

I used to be certified to do warrenty service on HP printers, including color laserjets. Been a long time since I've done it now though. HP laser printers are made by Canon. HP only makes the 'personality' board that's in it.

I feel your frustration. Dealing with driver and setup issues can be a real headache. Sometimes you have to go in via control panel and delete the unit, and then let it reinstall. I used to get through it that way quite a bit.

Its unreasonable to expect developers to provide backward compatibility for old, possibly discontinued peripherals in perpetuity.

There are ways around it (by running a Linux environment emulator - but the setup takes some techie neurons) by trying out the "incompatible drover" method 1/3 of the way down this web page:

I own a 22-year-old HP commercial laser printer that still worked flawlessly.
The toner cartridges lasted what seemed like forever and it would blast out pages faster than shit through a goose. Even full color photo pictures would print in just seconds.

But HP stopped drivers for it to work with any newer operating system rendering a completely functional printer a brick.

They don’t want a printer to actually work cheaply and efficiently, forcing everyone to buy the new printers that don’t work and cost more per copy than what the Staples store charges for a copy.

The workhorse that is now just a decoration:
I get it.

Same with having a working internet connection. My business has become completely dependent on both since 2000 AD.

You can use any driver that supports PCL 3/4 given its age.

95 percent of the drivers are the same for a given brand, the 5 percent is feature differences. If you just want it to print, that'll work.

I think there is even a genertic PCL3/4 driver, or if yours has Postcript you can use PS driver.

Never mind....your ****ed.

That is one of those 'host based printers' that they used to cut down on costs by offloading all the rendering to the computer.
