I bought tags just the othe day. Chicks at the office seem to think it's just going to take a new shape. Essentially if you buy a used car from a friend, no tax paid. That is where the numbers will get weird for the simple reason I could tell you that I'm selling out my limited editition Volt for 30 grand. We all know that's not reasonable, so between sellers and on paper, the price comes down to an amazing 4 grand for paperwork purposes of course.

That's not my understanding. From what i have read private party sales will be taxed just like dealer sales now. The tax will be based off a NADA type value.

While one tax is going away, legislators tacked on a new tax on private sales of vehicles, which had been a tax-free exchange. Like the removal of the ad valorem tax, auto dealers had a standing request at the General Assembly to tax person-to-person sales.

House Majority Leader Larry O’Neal, R-Bonaire, said putting so-called “casual” sales and cars sold by dealers on an even playing field is fair.

“There are only two other states besides us that have casual sales exemptions,” he said.

For instance, last year for front of the motor home, I bought two NEW LT 225/75/16 truck tires ....225 bux out the door, mounted balanced, with tax....

in the rear, I got 08 date code 4 matching tires LT 215/75/16 for 200 bux even, mounted balanced, out the door with tax.....

front of the vette, several years ago....255/50/17 240 bux same gig....

rear of vette, been a longer time and these are sadly NLA 275/50/17 220 bux same gig.....

tires for Escort, 165? 60/15 two NEW out the door for......140 bux.....

for some reason the TIRE business is very competitive here in my region, must be well over a dozen tire stores just within 5 miles of my house, maybe closer to TWO dozen..... only ONE closed up shop in the 15 years I been here, and 2-3 opened....so go figger....

In SC we pay personal propety tax every year on every vehicle that is licensed. When you buy a car from a private party, you have to pay the taxes on it first (sales tax, capped at $300 new or used) then you can go to the DMV to get a tag. The value is based upon whatever is written on the title being transferred, not on any outside valuation (KBB, NADA, etc.) so obviously that gets abused.
