Default Rite of passage story

Was telling one of my neighbors kids a few weeks ago about Harbor Freight. He said he had never heard of them. I told him I would take him some day to check it out. Well, today was the day. He was like a little kid in a candy store! I showed him that most of the stuff wasn't exactly high quality but some of the stuff is OK. He was looking to get a floor jack similar to mine, so they just happened to have a 3 ton steel one on sale (is anything ever sold there for full price?). Of course he was going to need jack stands, and shocker, they were on sale too! He got what he wanted and we spent the better part of an hour just wandering around looking. I told him beforehand not to bring more money than he wanted to spend. Good thing too, he wanted all kinds of shit! When we finally left, I told him he successfully passed the rite and was now a man

He wants to go back when he has more disposable income

Oh yeah, he got his freebie too. He picked a strip magnet.

LOL, actually kind of cool to hear some of the younger generation working on cars... It's rare in this area.. The more common is the parents buying them a new ride and paying to maintain it.

True. This kid really likes working on cars. He's 19 and wants to buy a mid sixties something. He's not real sure just what yet, but is leaning towards a 4 door chevy. He doesn't like 2 door cars!

Well, he will get a good deal on something as 4 door cars are less desirable

HF floor jacks are great, I have a few...including that Daytona jack which is a Snap On clone...Snap On actually sued HF over that thing...and lost. Probably built in the same place.

My grandson, who is 31 works on anything and everything. I was putting tools in his hands when he was six. After high school he went to MMI in Arizona and he is a certified mechanic for about five brands of bikes. He works in a custom Harley Davidson shop now. He works on cars, too. He built several V8 engines.

Every time I go to his house he's got something in his garage that he's working on as a side job for someone. His latest project for himself is a '65 Mustang with all modern running gear in it. The car/bike hobby is perfect for him, he just loves it.

My wife can't even imagine why they build two door cars. She just doesn't get it.

What does she think of 2 door cars with no back seat like Corvette? My brothers 3 boys who are in their early 30's have been working on cars and bikes since they were teens. They love the 50's 60's and 70's cars and trucks.

He also prefers 4 door trucks. He thinks my regular cab short bed is funny looking!

She enjoyed the Corvette, but not on the same level I did. She had children when she was young, and I know that makes you appreciate four door cars. Especially with the car seats kids have to use now. I like my four door Nissan at times, like when I have to put the dog crate in it.

I bought a four ton jack from HF and I only jacked up a lawnmower one time and then it never worked again. Stupid me thought the seals were blown so I got a better three ton. Turns out that the old one was low on fluid. I put some in and it worked.

Still don't know where the fluid went. I am floor jack and jackstand poor - two jacks and at least 6 stands.

Oh, and that was a nice thing to do for the young man. I bet he will remember that his whole life.

Good story. Shop there occasionally, usually stock up on the blue nitrile gloves for detailing, always on sale, and odds and ends. Some of their ratcheting wrenches aren't bad.

I’ve had jacks leak oil if the handle is left in the down position with pressure released, not sure if that makes sense but I now make sure I always have them stored with the handle vertical
