Default Jeeps

I was thinking it would be nice to get a Jeep but I don't know anything about them so what can you tell me good or bad? I like the CJ's with the removable top and big tires but I think they stopped making those in the mid 80's so it's the Wrangler now. I would get the older CJ if everything was mechanically awesome so the age doesn't bother me.

So what is good or bad with these things, auto or manual, are they freezing in the winter, do they tip over with the big tires, are there good engines and bad? It would mainly be for street use with some mild off road like two tracks, no rock climbing or taking it to the dunes.

Thanks.

You won't want a 2 Door then. A 4 Door will need to have at least 3:73 gears which will give you about 3500 lbs. towing capacity. I've never heard of many people towing anything w/ a Jeep, tho'.

Ok, let's forget the towing idea then. It's my wife who wants a boat, I've had 3 and swore I'd never get another.

Any woman that wants a boat, buy her one.

All women that like boats are crafty on the futon.

No offense to to the OP.

As far as Jeeps; they suck for towing, but are fun otherwise.

IMO I would stick with a TJ over the CJ. I had an '01 and that thing was tough as nails. Cold in the winter? Yeah. Especially with a shitty soft top, and no rear 'window'. Not fun to drive that in a hail storm!

While not practical at all for a daily driver, that thing was an absolute blast on the trails. If you get one that's not already built, the right modifications will show you that your jeep can conquer most any trail. Summer days heading to the lake with the top off and no doors always proves to be fun.

Meh,you all are off by one letter....FJ40.
Even though I hate jeeps with a passion they did get it somewhat right with the tj,better underpinings and dana 44's were factory(nevermind they had D30 internals.) At least you didn't have to fab up mounts to put real ones in.Up here the frames are rotting out but thats cause of the salt.
Best bet for your tastes is a mid 90's Land Cruiser with lockers.Tow and trail rider all in one with luxury to boot.

We bought a 2005 and put a 4" lift and big tires because we thought it looked cool I guess. It made driving it suck. The big tires tended to leach power from an already slow vehicle. Also, while the lift kit and big tires made driving off road better, it was way harder to drive on the highway. I'm not knocking Jeeps, we just didn't do our homework and we weren't happy with it after we did it.

A boat is a hole in the water surrounded by wood, fiberglass or aluminum into which you pour money.

They ride like shit, get bad gas mileage, the tops are a pain in the ass to remove and you get filthy in the process, it leaks and it doesn't tow worth a shit.

All of the things below and then some, know what your getting into before you buy. I had a lifted 91 and now have a 06 Rubicon, love them both and will always have one. Living in earthquake, mudslide and fire land makes them somewhat practical, but there not a car or a truck. If you want cool buy a GT-R, 50% will sell them after a few years.
