'Irresistible' worker fired in Iowa: 'I don't think it's fair'

(CNN) -- It may not be fair, but it's not illegal -- not in Iowa.

Melissa Nelson, a worker fired for being "irresistible" to her boss, spoke out Saturday about a high court decision that said her termination broke no discrimination law.

"The last couple of days have just been an emotional roller coaster. I'm trying to stay strong. It's tough," she told CNN's Don Lemon. "I don't think it's fair. I don't think it's right."

Nelson spoke one day after the all-male Iowa Supreme Court ruled on her case. The high court sided with a lower court, ruling that Nelson's termination did not constitute sex discrimination under the Iowa Civil Rights Act.

She was not fired because of her gender, the court decided, but because her boss and his wife felt Nelson was a threat to their marriage.

Nelson was hired in 1999 as a dental assistant for James Knight. She stayed on at the Fort Dodge business for more than 10 years.

The dentist that pays her salary should have every right to fire her, for whatever reason he chooses. Assuming that she didn't have an employment contract, then she was an at will employee. She could quit anytime, and be fired any time. I think it was a douchey move on the part of the dentist, but I agree with others....it probably had something to do with preserving marital harmony.

The dentist could have just quietly tried to help her get another job, paid her some kind of severance and just left it at that. Maybe he did try to do that. Maybe not.

In any case, the lady sued, very publicly. What that tells me as a prospective employer is DO NOT hire this litigious lady. If she sued her last employer, I damn sure don't want her working for me, looking for lawsuit fodder. I think she shot herself in the foot.

Assuming that she was competent and hot, she should have no problem finding a new job working for any male dentist. She might even have been able to poach new customers from the old dentist who thought she got a raw deal and found out where she was now working, a plus for the new employer. However, Litigious Lady just proved to me I shouldn't touch her with a 10 foot pole.

What is it with some of these male dentists anyhow? I know two locally that have literally driven themselves to poverty via outright whoreishness and the subsequent divorce, alimony, child support and settlement payments that followed.

A Houston dentist was driven to....death (pun intended) when his dentist wife caught him cheating with the dental hygenist and ran him over 3 or 4 times with the Mercedes. I would have found her innocent of all charges, but I think she got 10 years for that.

A Houston-area woman was arrested early Thursday morning, accused of running over her husband and killing him after learning that he was cheating on her.

When asked about her husband's death, Clara Harris told News2Houston that, "It was an accident."

But Nassau Bay police said that they don't see it as an accident and said that Harris has been charged with first-degree murder.

The incident happened shortly before 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Hilton Nasa Clear Lake, Nasa Road 1, in Nassau Bay.

Investigators said that Clara Harris confronted her husband, David Lynn Harris, in the hotel's lobby.

"She said that she was just distraught over the marital problems that they were evidently having," Nassau Bay Police Lt. Joe Cashiola said.

The argument moved to the hotel's parking lot, where Clara Harris got behind the wheel of her Mercedes and ran her husband down, authorities said.

"Officers arrived on the scene and found the victim had been struck multiple times with the car," Cashiola said. "Since then, we have brought the wife up here for questioning (and) during the interview she has admitted her involvement."

Police said that Clara Harris had long suspected her husband was cheating on her, and that her suspicions were allegedly confirmed by a private investigator.

"She has admitted hiring a private investigation firm to follow her husband around," Cashiola said. "So there was some type of history. We're still digging into that."

Investigators said that David Harris' 16-year-old daughter from a previous marriage was in the car with his wife and watched him die.

The couple had two other children, who are currently staying with their grandparents, authorities said.

Both Clara and David Harris were dentists and lived in the town of Friendswood.

David Harris' patients reacted with shock after showing up at his dental office in the Clear Lake area and learning about what happened.

Clara Harris was taken to the Harris County Jail. She was released on a $30,000 bond.

She hired attorney George Parnham to represent her. Parnham is best known for representing Andrea Yates, the mother who drowned her five children.

David Harris' funeral is scheduled for Saturday at 1 p.m. at the South Park Funeral Home and Cemetery.

A few observations:

1) This case is three years old. Has she not gone back to work since 2009? I find that hard to believe.

2) In the news report, the dentist said that he was "citing her infrequent sex life..." How would he know about that? Assuming she told him voluntarily, that would be her dumb move. Don't tell your boss details of your private life. Keep your mouth shut about things like that because you never know how it will come back around.

3) Dentist is a jackass. I hope (and wouldn't be surprised if) he loses a lot of customers. Man up, get a divorce and go be with someone you want to be with. Don't try and make your lack of self control, stupidity and poor choice in a spouse someone else's fault.

Sounds like both of them are a couple of dim bulbs, but the dentist is a bigger one for making a real dick move.

Dentists are the biggest bunch of whack jobs I've ever seen. My wife is a dental assistant, and is looking for a new career field. I would put the quack/good ratio at worse than lawyers (not including PI lawyers). And they are horrible employers. No offense tooth fairy, I'm sure you're one of the good ones.
