Default History buffs, military afficiandos, document authenticators...

I have this book, The Standard Dictionary of Facts and inside the cover on a formally blank page is this —

I found a typed copy in the Smithsonian here —

https://postalmuseum.si.edu/MyFellow...rshing3_z.html

I’ve sent an email off to The Smithsonian but wondered if anyone had any contacts or leads on possible authentication?

doesn't look like his autograph.

i'd guess that a soldier copied it into a book he owned.

My initial thought too — however with the cramped space it may not have been conducive to flourishing his signature as per norm. I know absolutely nothing about handwriting and patterns so I may just be grasping at straws.

I'm skeptical that a man of Pershing's means would have to grasp for a spare book to record his thoughts. Surely he would have found a blank sheet of paper for such a task.

I definitely agree, there are many scribbles throughout this book of random thoughts and blurbs. However if the thought came to him of what to write, he may have used what was near.

there were no copy machines back then. so, if you had made it thru the war, and had greatly admired Gen. Pershing, you might want to copy down some of his words for later reflection.

long ago, i copied down the Gettysburg address onto a small sheet of paper i kept in my wallet for many years. same idea.

I don’t doubt your logic, just analyzing all angles. I have no money in this book and I do not have desire to make money off it. My goal is have it’s autenticity validated or debunked. If it is indeed authentic, I’d love for it to be displayed properly.

any ownership names in the book?

best bet would be to compare handwriting samples. thankfully, you can find examples of Pershing's handwriting online.

my untrained eye tells me it's not in his hand.

Maybe he was a bad speller. Just throwing it out there.

There are random quotes scribed inside and notations about different page numbers...also random definitions written out.

I definitely have severe doubts that it’s nothing more than a scribbled copy, but I’d like to know for sure

I don't know what it might mean, but I find it curious that Pershing would sign with the title of Commander in Chief. Isn't that title reserved for the President of the United States?

He was appointed Commander in Chief of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) in 1917.
