I've owned several diesels and own one now but it is too lightweight to tow your trailer it's a 1500. I can tell you that the new diesels are great no more rolling coal, clean air, no smell of diesel, gas mileage better, more torque low end. Get the 3500 duelly for your trailer you will thank me later. If you get a diesel get it tuned with a good programmer. Check into the Ram Cummins.

Do not buy a high mileage diesel and try to buy as new as possible.

I am not saying it is not in pretty good shape, I have no idea and it is impossible to tell from pictures. It could be a cream puff with 156,000 miles on it or it could be beat to shit. You have to go lay eyes on it in person to know. One thing is 100% for sure: it wasn't a garage queen. None of them are. With few exceptions, big diesel duallies are used for one thing: towing heavy-ass shit. They lead a hard life. And they hold their resale like nothing else.

I never say buying new is smarter than buying used, but this is one exception. The used ones bring blood money, both retail and wholesale. Even the pieces of shit. i say spend the money on a new one and enjoy having a warranty and the enjoyment of a new rig. The last thing you want to be thinking about while traveling and having fun is repairing the thing in BFE.

Best and wisest post you will ever read. I am of EXACTLY the same opinion. A big diesel truck is the 1 and only thing that I would buy new every time without question.

I bought my 2012 new and with 60k miles, sold it for more than I paid for it. Bought my '15 Denail dually new and could sell it today EASILY for as much as I paid. As said, the used market on these things is insane.

Also consider things like trade in tax credit, etc that can sway the price of new vs. used depending on your state.

Now that I have no race car for the time being and don't really "need" the dually, I actually considered trading down a size. The problem with that is that the used ones that I would replace it with cost as much as I paid for the dually new!

Yep. They're all pretty good these days but the D-max Allison combo is pretty hard to beat.

The '12 and newer GM trucks are pretty bulletproof and have held up well in my experience. Dodge is... well... Dodge, which means that it will most likely run forever but the interior and body will fall apart after about 5 years. I don't know much about the newest offerings from Ford. My biggest gripe with them and what pushed me to the GMC again was the interior. Some people like it. Not me.

Why?

If you buy new or close enough to new to have a warranty, you just voided it, and for what? They all make asinine power these days so you certainly don't "need" it for towing and the gas mileage that you (might) gain will take about 300k miles to pay itself off (Yes, I've done the math). The huge gains just aren't there like they were on the old trucks.

I got the F-450.

Looked at several.

This thing was insanely well-maintained. Steering is very tight. Stuff's obviously been replaced. Lots of extras the Denali didn't have.

I'm very happy, and so is Molly.

PLUS it had 20,000 miles less than the ad on the internet said!

Got a fair price on my trade.

Life is good.

Yes finally I think I took 10k for it, it took a while but I think found the right owner, it’s taking a dad and his boys down to their hunting ranch on the weekends. After all the work I put into it it was running great.

Congrats on the 6.7 my father in Law has an f250 he loves it, although we’re about to redo the front end again due to death wobble. I can’t wait to hear your impressions towing with your last truck vs this.

Good on you to get the proper tow vehicle for your application. I see way too many undersized vehicles towing beyond their capacity.

In the last few weeks, I've seen 5th wheel campers being towed by RAM 1500s.

There are quite a few options out there that claim to be 1/2 ton towable. I doubt it is a fun exerience but I’m sure it’s possible.
