Never a good sign when you don’t have to tear down the engine to see this.
Ouch Sorry to hear about the engine failure.

Hey, on a bright note, I can build C6 Corvettes and NA Miatas in my sleep.
Might be a great idea to maximise your return. ( well, some of it anyway )

You are nicer than me. I get that legally speaking, race car, no warranty, blah, blah, blah but if I paid a gazillion dollars for an engine and it grenaded that soon the remaining 7 pistons would be up someone at Texas Speed's ass.

I will be pursuing that avenue. Not expecting anything, but will pursue.

call Me when you get it apart. I need some parts for mock-up in my C4. I’ll come get them. Hate to see this man.

Wow. Sorry to see this Craig. I look forward to the rebuild pics or which way you go for the new race machine

That's crazy......the damn thing should have been bullet proof.

From what I know about motors though, revving them to redline with no load on them is asking for trouble. With all that torque it probably wasn't necessary to rev it like that on the line.

Mind you, my knowledge of motors is about 25 years out of date.

Can't believe you didn't install an hour meter/gauge on your race engine.

There are a lot of parts on the grenaded engine that can be reused which should bring the cost back to an easier managed total. Since you built a roll cage into the black Corvette, won't be hard to reconvert it back to a street machine? And won't it need to be repainted?

Rather than covert the 2009 Z06, you would probably be cheaper to drop another long block into the car.

Had a night to sleep on it, and I think I'm still leaning on converting it back to stock, with a factory crate LS7 for $15k. No roll cage, so no issue there. The wreck in the Keys back in 2010 means the front fascia will need to be painted. We'll see, I'm in no rush, but as far as racing goes, I think I'm done with the Z06's for now. However, I have not ruled out doing something in it after the stock engine repair, and seeing what is still useable, like the intake, long tube headers, blah blah blah. Keep the cam out of it, and have it tuned for the parts that go on. Lots of decisions....

I want my '09 to stay a garage queen, but I still want to start doing track days, so I will eventually be in the market for something already built. Again, in time. It will take me some time to lick the financial wounds from this episode. $50k/yr. cash to Georgia Tech is a big nut for the next 3.5 years.

it is possible to enjoy a hobby (auto cross) and just enjoy the day, and not worry about winning.

It's the same reason you buy a Corvette to track and not a Miata. You get addicted to the horsepower. Then the adrenaline and competitiveness kicks in.

Can't you enjoy a BB gun at the range ? No need for all those larger calibers is there ?

I was going to suggest there are a couple of low mileage LS7s on that other site for sale, but knowing the valve train issues they have, going new may be the better option.

So why use another LS7? How about an LS9? Should bolt in with minimal changes to the car.
