Not just the sale but the after sale. The whole dealership gave off bad feelings. If and when the car needs service it would have to go there. The nearest dealership is in Louisville or Indy and I don't feel like driving a 3 hour round trip to have work done.

Again, the nearest dealers are 1.5 to 3 hours away.

WTF?

Why did they have your keys??????
It's a common practice here.
When evaluating your vehicle for trade in value,
they never return your keys until you ask for them.
Many times, it's a stall tactic to get you to agree to some
type of deal.
Usually takes more then 2 requests to get your keys back,
paticulalrly if you tell them you're no longer interested.

I'd think this also happens up North.

Try this - "You're mechanic needs to drive my trade-in to evaluate it? Okay, I'll go with him."

It's never happened to me or anyone I know. I found the thread on the other forum and the dude said he had to ask for his keys 5 or 6 times. If I had to ask a second time it would not be a pretty sight in the dealership.

When I bought my 2015 Charger I considered trading in my 2010 SRT8 and the salesman came out with me to look over the car. Never drove it and never asked me for my keys.

I've read so many horror stories about car dealerships mainly form Americans. I'm not saying Canadian Dealerships are perfect but I don't think they play as many games.

Worst experience I have ever had was about 30 years ago when I was looking at a used truck at one of the larger used car lots near me. I went and looked at the truck in the parking lot and, of course, one of the salesmen comes out to talk. I told him I'd like to take it for a test drive. He said sure, lets go get the keys. We head into his cubicle and he starts with "we need to make a copy of your license before we can go". I'm OK with it and give him my license. He has someone come get it to make a copy. While we are waiting for that he starts with the questions. Whats your name and address? How long have you been at that address? Where do you work? How long have you been there? This is not that concerning to me because I'm thinking as soon as the copy of my license comes back we can just go for a test drive. When he gets to asking for my SS# I stopped him and asked why do you want that? He says to make sure my credit is OK. At this point I'm thinking copying my license is just a delay tactic and I tell him I'm not giving him any more info. Hell, I don't even know if I want the truck or not. He tells me it's standard procedure and I said too bad, get my license back, I'm done. At this point he gets the manager over to ask what the problem is. There were a few heated words at that point and he storms off and tells the saleshole to get my license and I need to leave! I'm like, no shit. It was a nice looking truck, too!

My best friend had a top of the line Jeep- for 4 months. It spent 2 in the shop. He now has a loaded GMC Yukon. He couldn’t be happier. Hope your experience is better than his.

Oh, and the last 4 new cars I’ve bought, all were internet buys. Screw the whole car lot sales thing.

The last GMC Yukon Denali I had has gone thru three owners and two transmissions already.
I'll see how the Trackhawk looks when I see one.

my fully loaded Yukon is on its second torque converter. Six dealership visits for drivetrain issues alone, and one dealer leaving the oil drain plug loose..I’m sick of it I just can’t find a more kid appropriate car right now

I never offer a trade-in prior to making some sort of an initial agreement on the vehicle I'm interested in. I tell them that there may be a trade-in, but probably not. I have my wife drive me to the dealership in her vehicle, and tell them that for all they are concerned we only have one car and want a second car. Am I making myself clear here? Then, when I get them to agree on the price for the vehicle I'm considering, I then (and have only done this I think twice) show them my trade vehicle. And I tell them I'm not going to take less than X for it, and am quite serious about that.

That's just how I've done it over the last 35 years or so. Works out pretty well. I did vary from this strategy a bit when I bought my MDX in 2010 because honestly I had pretty much rode my '97 Expedition hard and it had a big old caved in rear door from some big commercial vehicle backing into it hard. Told them I would take the MDX at sticker minus $2000 if they gave me $6000 for the Expedition. They countered with $4000, we compromised on $5000. Total time at the dealership was under 90 minutes including test drive.

When we bought my wife's 2016 CX-5, I told them her old car was a 2005 Acura RSX Type-S with a bazillion miles (well, like 130k or so) and that I was going to sell it for at least $6000 but if they wanted to offer more that would be great but of course they (sight-unseen) said $2500 max so no problem we bought the CX-5 with no trade and indeed I sold the RSX very quickly for my asking price of $6000 cash.

I have never traded in a car before, I always sell private party. Texas sales tax is 6.25% on vehicles, so the tax savings from trading is more than offset by selling private party. I have always thought about trying to arrange an in and out, but thus far haven't ever had the logistics for that work out.

I never threw anyone's keys on the roof. Sometimes a driver's license would get misplaced during the copying process, though. Not by me, of course.

Once a dealer was refusing to give me my keys. Told them they had 3 minutes to have them in my hand or I was calling the police. Had the keys in under a minute. Cost them the sale as I planned to buy from them having had a good experience there previously. I share the story with every Corvette owner I knew or met for a good while hoping to cost them additional business.

Which dealership? We bought a Chevy van from that big dealer in Grapevine YEARS ago (like 1997) and it was a pleasant experience. Sold it 3 years later in California for MORE than we paid for it. Apparently, California likes Texas conversion vans. LOL

Frank Para was the dealer. On 183 in Irving. I bought my 2004 Corvette there and it was a very good experience. 3 years later, looking at 2007s and not so much.

The dealer in Grapevine is Classic Chevrolet. I had an awful service experience with them in the 90s and for years I wouldn't even look at the place while driving by. But gave them another chance after the Frank Para incident and bought my 2007 there. Best car buying experience I've had. At the time Classic was one of the go to dealers for Corvette enthusiasts. Still a HUGE dealer.
