Default Dealer Insanity...2020 Supra at almost $200K

[I][I][I]
https://jalopnik.com/heres-a-2020-to...000-1836757761

There’s regular crazy and there’s Florida crazy. In the last day alone, we’ve seen terrestrial manatees, ass-eating bacteria, and blatant electricity theft all out of the Sunshine State. But all of that is nothing compared to the markup on this 2020 Supra.

Until this classified ad from Toyota Kia of Vero Beach, Florida showed up, at least. We’re no strangers to stiff dealer markups on exciting new cars. They’re not always fair, but when supply’s low, demand is gonna be high. But just how high can it get?

We were amazed to find out.

It turns out that this dealer is not selling this Supra (which starts at $49,995) up 50 percent. They’re not even marking it up 100 percent. They’ve added $138,819 to the price tag of this fully loaded Supra Premium in Renaissance Red. There have been some pretty high markups on this car already, but this is absurdity.

Toyota Kia of Vero Beach did indeed confirm to us over the phone that the price listed in the ad is accurate, and they did say that they have received “serious interest” for the car at that price.

The last time we spoke about a new model getting marked up beyond affordability it was the Jeep Gladiator. A convertible pickup truck with the off-road ability of a Wrangler is going to attract a lot more attention (and potential buyers) than something more conventional, and dealers have found that in some cases that attention is worth a cool twenty grand. The same thing went for the Dodge Challenger Demon. Limited production and preposterous power figures were naturally going to be matched by sticker shock to the tune of $175,000.
Now, it always does cost more to be an early adopter. Just ask someone who bought the first iPhone on day 1. It’s bound to be worth it to some people. It’s exciting to be the first to show up in the latest machine, especially when you get to do quarter miles before ever stepping out of the car on your first drive. But at some point marking up the newest model stops being about harnessing demand and starts being about getting the kind of attention that warrants a write-up . And hey, it worked.

In '06, the Chevrolet dealer I used to work for wanted a 20K markup on Z06 Corvettes. I asked my old boss, if he really thought they would get that much. He said they let a guy walk out yesterday at 15K over.

Here's how he explained their thinking. He said they were only allocated two Z06s, and he had all summer to find two idiots. And you know what? He was right. He found them, and it did take all summer.

In '01 when I worked there I had a phone call from a guy who asked if we had any Z06s on the lot. I said yes, and he said "I understand they go for 15K above sticker". They're out there.

Any dealer can ask any price for a new, hot car. The thing that separates the mouth breathers from others is not to be the dumb ass that pays what they're asking. PT Barnum's saying come to life.

I figured the only possible customers at that price point are U Tubers that need to be the first out there with videos or possibly aftermarket tuners/suppliers who want to be the first out of the gate with performance enhancements

I bought my '05 in April of that year. I joined a Corvette club and started going to Corvette events all over NorCal. My car was a demo that one of the dealership owners drove for awhile. It had 1,500 miles on it. I paid 2K under MSRP. Even with as many Corvette people I was meeting, it was almost six months before I met someone who paid under MSRP. Most people I met had paid 2-5K over MSRP. Part of the reason I got mine for the price I did, even though it was demo was that I bought it from the place I used to work at.

When I was signing the papers the F&I guy (who I used to work with) said there is a 1K rebate on every new Chevrolet except the Corvette, but whoops I made a mistake and gave it to you. I said I didn't want him to get in trouble and he said the boss told him to do it. Also gave me a seven year 70K warranty for their cost, which was around $800.

The only insanity is on the part of the buyer who pays that price.

No, absurd is paying the outrageous premium for one of the first ZR1's and immediately turning it into a racecar. ( just the cage and initial prep work was over $40K )

Then, the "I never raced before" owner, who was on slicks even though the builder told him to learn the car on Hoosier DOT race tire ( more forgiving if you screw up ) crashed the car in warm ups before the first race.

The car was so new, parts were NOT available yet. ( Chevy was using all the available parts to build brand new ZR1s )

Mr "more money than sense" purchased another ZR1 at an outrageous premium to "borrow" parts from to fix the first one he crashed.

I ordered by 05 C6 in Sept. of 04 and took delivery in Dec. 04 Paid MSRP minus $1200 GM card points. No mark up and I got a free hat and 2 free tee shirts.

I'll check but I think they were lost when my hard drive crashed. It was a yellow C6 ZR1 with Goodyear slick ( bold white letters on the slicks).

There is a used car lot here in town that has one already. I don't see anyone around here paying 6 figures for one, but hey, you never know.

Pure greed,my dealership has its marked up 20k over sticker. They also have TRD Pro Taco's with an extra 5k attached to them because they are so rare...now they have a few of them sitting on the lot collecting dust because adding 5k to a mid size truck with a sticker of 45k is such a good move.

Reason for waiting I'm not going to be another unpaid Beta tester like I was in 05. I ordered my dream car and it was a museum pick up. It also had the infamous DBS problem. (Dead Battery Syndrome) Had the car for 2 years and even worked with Chevy engineers to try to fix the problem,. In disgust I dumped it and bought a 07 Z06. Right after that they finely found a fix. I did wait till the second year to get my C7!

Me in 2001 selling Chevrolets:

Woman buying new Duramax: Am I getting a good deal here?

Me: Are you kidding? Three grand above sticker for a new Duramax is a screamin' deal.

Seriously, there was a dealer mark-up on every new car on the lot. From 1K on a Malibu to 15K on a Z06. Very few people ever paid it, but a lot of people paid MSRP and think they really worked us over.
