There's clothing and other stuff to. I donated a few things and sent some money with him.

When Cedar Rapids had the big derecho storm in August he drove all over town cooking for people and gave away tons of food.

That's good to hear. People have been very generous providing water and food. A nearby BBQ joint has been giving away food for the past 2 or 3 days. There's a brewery near me that has a natural spring on the property. The owner rented a huge tanker truck and brought it to one of the local mega churches to supply water. The water crisis stretched out so he did it a second day. Also a number of restaurants in town set up a large food distribution today.
Much of the infrastructure for food and water distribution was in place already due to Covid so that has helped.

Thanks for posting this.

When the pipes are pressurized, ie, full, there is no where for the freezing water to go. The path of least resistance are the joints in the line, or a weak spot in the pipe itself. This is why you should leave a faucet on slightly. If the water is flowing, there is room for expansion.

I had to go to 3 stores yesterday to get a few groceries. Shelves were empty at the first two. The third store had a truck come in.

Haven't quite figured out why there's runs on stores during cold snaps or hurricanes.
I mean we need a few things usually but damn either people keep zero food on hand(suspect) or they're panic buying.

Survived the blizzard of 78 on what was in the house for many days until stores could even open, then got to walk to store for some canned goods and bread. The neighbors across the street didn't have food for days as they literally kept no food in the house.

This! Exactly This! And considering that this was a Winter event, nobody should have lost food from the fridge. No pantries were blown into the next county. I haven't been to a store since this started, and won't go until things settle out.

I did experience the trauma of eating at an Italian place last night, and being told they weren't serving water. OK, I will have a Dr Pepper. Where do you suppose the water from for the fountain drink machine comes from.

Some of it is just ignorance. People have stuff, but they are afraid they won't have stuff if other people buy stuff, so they go buy stuff they don't actually need, so they won't be without.

I saw people at Lowe's buying 10 sticks of PVC pipe. Holy shit, I could do half my house with that. They don't need it, They just want to have it.

Kinda like the runs on toilet paper. We’ve been without power several times for a week and managed. I didn’t like it but I had food, lp gas for the grill, portable generator. My only gripe is that we have an electric water heater.
