Well I'm going to ride this one out with my dad here at the house. I don't expect the roof to hold on at those wind speeds. I am extremely worried on this one. As soon its over I'll report back on the devastation. Wish me luck. Signing off.

You may regret this decision. the ventusky.com path is currently showing this storm to be the WORST possible scenario for the east coast. Key Largo, Homestead, downtown Miami, Fort Lauderdale, and WPB are all going to get wiped the heck out.

Running along the coast like this allows two things: Irma stays fed with warm water, and storm surge is going to be HUGE.

They just ordered mandatory evacuation of people here in St Lucie county who are on or near the water or living in mobile homes anywhere.

I was outside just now talking to several long time residents. Almost all have stayed. We are near a local major hospital and fire station so if we lose power it will be a short time.

Buildings are all CBS with wind mitigated roofs. With wind speeds now estimated for the area to be 145 or less we should do Ok.

We are located two mile due west of exit 118 on I 95. It's about as far west as I 95 goes.

for several days they kept showing all the spaghetti models ending pretty much on top of my hose in central SC. Now they are showing it shifting west...after it smears Florida up into Georgia.

What's beginning to really piss me off is the pleas coming in from people who can't find plywood for boarding up windows. Why don't you have them on hand? Can find water. Fill your Tupperware, empty soda bottles, pots and pans and bath tubs. Can't find gas because they waiting till today.

If you live in a Hurricane prone area you have to prepare months in advance. Slowly build up a two week food supply of non perishables. Save your soda bottles over time. Buy your plywood on sale in the winter and buy gas cans when you see them on sale.

I have 20 gallons of gas always rotating on hand, a generator, and anything that I may need to keep the wife from bitching if a blizzard hits and puts us down for two weeks.
God ! The last thing that I need is to hear a woman bitching because she can't get internet or watch TV...

I dunno.
If Irma doesn't start her schwing northward soon... I'd venture a guess she will scoot between Floridan and Cuba; and end up in the Gulf of Mexico.

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but that isn't a guarantee. I live near the edge of town, and at the city limits, maybe 3/4 a mile from me, on my power grid is......the sewer plant. I thought the same thing you did, that we would be critical infrastructure that would come back on line first. After Hurricane Ike, I was without power for two weeks. The sewer plant got power pretty quick, but our subdivision, on the way toward the sewer plant didn't get restored in any kind of hurry, and our utility lines are all buried, so it wasn't a case of replacing downed power lines.

And Hospitals have generator back-up. I'd be willing to bet a fire station would, too.

Serious question - you've got your place as protected as it can be, what do you have to gain by staying there? Best of luck to you but please be careful and stay safe.
