Working Interviews, should you get paid?
My wife went on a working interview today, where she worked as a normal member of the staff (not just observing). She was not compensated for her time at all. What does VBOT think? Should she have been paid for her labor?

Never heard of a "working interview", but if she was producing actual work, she should get paid for her efforts.

What type of work?
If it were me, I'd consider it part of the interview and not expect to be paid. |

So she is a dental assistant looking for a new position and worked at this dentists (not doctor) office all day as part of the interview process?
Is that correct? |

The Dr. was giving her an opportunity to prove she had the skills she said she has. Did she get a job offer? |

She went through an interview last week. Apparently 4 are doing working interviews this week, but yes. And the dentist is a Dr

Me personally i wouldn't say anything. Do the interview and see how it goes. Be diligent about the follow up. If she gets it great. If she doesn't then hit him up for money. My guess is he didn't bring it up because he didn't have the intention to pay though.... And if i am right about this, does she really want to work for him anyway?????

It's very possible she'll get a paycheck on the next payroll cycle. With all the payroll rules (taxes), most places aren't going to pay out without going through their payroll system.

I disagree. If it were me, I'd never mention it again.
All the area dentists typically know each other and visit at conferences and other dentist events. The last thing you need is for your wife to get on the "pain in the ass/do not hire" list over a few hundred bucks. |

I take good care of my teeth so I never have to go to a dentist until im too old to give a shit...dentists creep me out, I had a bad experience as a young boy, at one...it scarred me for life.
edit- id expect to be compensated for my time...there is no such thing as a free lunch. If it were a situation where she was shadowing an employee for the day, id say no..but she used her skills and experince in a professional setting...to me, thats employment. |
