That was my impression having already been in the North Sea twice but my sailing was done on relatively flat water with a fair wind. I've no doubt the ocean would be a terrorizing experience.

Ever heard of the Stars and Strips? The 12 Meter boat captained by Dennis Connor? I sailed that on its trial runs before turning it over to Connor to win the America's Cup.

Good boat. A little slow in the turns though.

I’ve owned many boats, both power and sail. Started with a 19’ O’Day Mariner on Kentucky Lake, the last blow boat was a 33’ Endeavor on Galveston Bay. Have bare-boat chartered several times in the Bahamas and BVI on cats and monohulls up to 50’. Now I just crew on a friends 44’ Cat.

Also had a few cruisers and center consoles, but boatless for now and probably for the time left. ⛵️

After his discharge from the USN after WW2, my dad got his 3rd mates license, and was going to join the Merchant Marine. Meeting my mom, marrying her, and my arrival killed that idea. When I was a kid he spent some time going over all the facets of being a working sailor. Morse code, flags, lights, rules underway, a lot of basic navigation. We had some fun with that, but I finally moved on to other interests. In hindsight, I should have stuck with him, learned it all, and eventually take off sailing. Of course, mom was a real wet blanket, and would never gone along with it. But my dad and I would have had a blast. An item on my bucket list is to finally learn how to sail. I really would like to get that done.

I’ve been sailing a few times and really enjoy it. I did some sailing therapy with the VA and learned some basics. Was a lot of fun.
