I wouldn't say anything about pay, if she wants to be seriously considered for this job.

What was the agreement prior to her going to this working interview?

edit- id expect to be compensated for my time...there is no such thing as a free lunch. If it were a situation where she was shadowing an employee for the day, id say no..but she used her skills and experince in a professional setting...to me, thats employment.
I'd go see this dentist.

My wife arranges and conducts interviews, as well as hires dental hygienists, at her office.
They do pay for working interviews.

The dentists threw a pretty good party on Sunday for the management staff.

There was no agreement but its customary, around here at least, to do something for them. Gift card, pay, etc

Working Interviews, should you get paid?
If you'd have called this an audition it wouldn't have taken me three trip through this thread to understand.

The working climate being what it is, I can see her not getting paid. I wouldn't say anything about it, but something would have been nice, like a gift card etc.

Tell her not to even consider working for this whore. This is how it starts.

You know, my g/f had this exact same thing happen. She applied with a company, they flew her out for the interview, reimbursed her expenses, but she spent a whole day working on behalf of the company as part of the interview process, and then was not hired. They did eventually reimburse her for her incidental travel expenses, but did not pay for the work time.

I guess had she wanted to make a big stink about it, she could have filed a claim for unpaid wages with whatever state agency was responsible for that sort of thing, in the state that she did the work in.

I have no problem with long interviews that involve skills assessments, demonstrations your ability, etc.. However, when you put someone on the front line, acting as an agent/representative of your company/practice, and interacting with your clientele as if they were an employee, they are making you money. You owe that person for their time, period. They were your employee for the day, de facto. When you line up a week's worth of these working interviews, you basically fill the position for the week for free.

I was upset she wasn't hired, and I agree with you, however, she still holds out hope of working for that company someday, so she said nothing, and didn't burn the bridge.

Yes. I've had assistants and front staff do working interviews before, always compensated at a fair rate
