when i was a kid, all the neighbor kids would get together at the local field (had a backstop for baseball/softball, but was big enough for football), and if we didn't have enough for an organized game of some sort, we'd play "smear the queer", basically tackle whoever had the ball. once they were tackled, they'd toss it to someone else, and it was game on again.

i doubt that version of "go outside and play" would pass muster today. kind of a version of Calvin Ball.

We played the exact same game but usually after our 'official' game. Kind of a final hoo-rah before we all jumped on our bikes and peddled home.

We called it Kill the guy with the ball.

We would have dirt clod fights, with King of the Mountain often added to the mix, and occasionally bamboo fishing pole segments, brooms, or whatever was handy. My right hand between the thumb and index finger was cut about 1" deep in that webbing by a bamboo pole segment that had began to splinter badly. That ****ing hurt, and IIRC was around 25 stitches.

Don't even get me started on the various "sweet ramps" we'd build and launch ourselves into corn fields, ditches, whatever. Sometimes we'd even make a token effort at protective gear, like football helmet and shoulder pads.

We had a version of King of the Mountain that involved wiffle ball bats 😂
Used to come home with bruises and welts but everyone had a good time. Our parents thought we were dumb asses but didn’t try to stop us

I was the ramp king. From about age 9 through 16 I was fearless. Higher, farther, I made them from doors and cinder blocks and anything. I was good at engineering something that could take the speed and weight and really launch. I broke a few wheels, popped tires etc.

Then one day, at 16, I was jumping in a tennis court over the net, I landed wrong and really seriously hurt my back and was afraid to tell my parents. I limped around school for a couple MONTHS in pain. I could barely carry my school books. It's jacked up to this day from that jump. I never built another ramp.
