I have a Win10 laptop used for writing and music production. It's older, but is I7 with a SSD so it moves just fine. This week I found out an automatic update had been installed. This update changed my program to an "S Mode" copy of Win10. That means that you can't download ANY software you didn't buy from the MS Store! I tried downloading an new version of a program I already had and kept getting bunced to the MS site and being told I am in S Mode and it can be turned off.....but....

....my computer doesn't ever show the link to the link to turn off S Mode, because it says it isn't installed on my computer! The laptop is now a brick for all due purposes. Before I buy any other computer, I have been looking into anything that runs Linux or other platforms or maybe even going to Apple (which I have had a bad realtionship with on all but one of their products).

Microsoft doesn't need another penny of my money. Ever.
I install an update blocker years ago on my laptop when they took option away to limit updates for 2 reasons. One i was on a limited cell data plan and it chewed up 80% of my data in a day or 2 and second Microsoft updates are as useful as a boil on your ass.
Bet i could turn your S mode off though...

One of the many things I like about MacOS is that I get to decide whether I take an update or not.

Actually, my 3-year old laptop will be able to upgrade to Windows 11 when it is released as it is TPM 2.0 capable as proven when I run "tpm.msc" from a command prompt.

What specifically do you see in the output from that command that tells you that your laptop is TPM 2.0 capable?

This may be a huge boost for Linux adoption, at least for the consumer market. I think a lot of software companies would release Linux versions if the market warranted. I'd likely go that route though my hatred of Apple is easing due to their emphasis on security.

Of course Apple does the same thing with their OS. The latest Apple OS needs hardware from 2014 or later. Windows 10 was released in 2015 (to get users off Win 7 BTW... IMO) and Win 11 requires Skylake architecture or later released the same year. When you replace an "obsolete" PC MS gets to sell an OEM license. Apple gets to sell you new obscenely expensive hardware.

My office PC is pre-Skylake architecture and I may to convert it to Linux with a virtual machine running a Windows 10 to support Photoshop, Lightroom, and other software not available for Linux.

The display screen shows the TPM Manufacturer (NTC); Manufacturer Version (1.3.2.8); and Specification Version (2.0).
