Default Want to trade a 700r4 Transmission. Where's a good place to start?

For the next T-bucket build I want to put in either a powerglide or a Turbo350 transmission on the back end of the SB Chebby motor we are dropping in.

Where's a good place to start looking to do a trade online?

Gene, do you know of anybody local?

any reason you can't/won't use the 700r on this new project?

It's too long for the frame. The 700r4 would end up requiring about a 4" drive shaft. To quote Obidiot, it's not "Optimal."

Somebody suggest I lengthen the frame, but I'm not so sure making a cut and welding in a few more inches to it will keep it as strong as it is. Plus, the only thing I can think of that would need to be changed after that is the bar going from the steering gear up to the control arm (right term?) on the front left wheel for the steering.

I would like the 700r4, but it seems like too much of a hassle at this point. Maybe if I had started with another frame it could work out.

DJ, all I know is to sell/trade on craigslist, shame I sold that 350 outta the motor home, as it would have been purrrrrrrrfect for your use....I did a 700 and had the drive shaft shortened, but it's a 2 piece POS anyway, and about 12' long more or less.... look under local CL for transmission under auto work, tons of guys there,

of you don't like that, get a core from RNF cores, he been good to me several times, and pay like 80 bux, pick up the new parts from Mitchell Trans parts up the road off Liberty street, in the hood just below MLK off I 95.....

I suspect you got maybe a 400 buck total project.....I can help you rebuild it, no sweat, who knows? it may even WORK......

Lets think abou this a bit more.

700r4 & th350 share a 27 spline yoke (31 spline th350 does exist, but are not norm)

700r4 bellhousing to transmount 22 3/8"

th350 bellhousing to transmount 20 3/8" (w/ 9-1/4" tailshaft housing)

700r4 overall length 30 3/4"

th350 overall length 30 5/8" (w/ 9-1/4" tailshaft housing)

700r4 & th350 can utilize the same trans mount.

Shift linkage interchanges. Standard linkage adjustment will need to be done.

oil coooler lines interchange with some minor bending.

speedo drive gear. But NOT the driven gear.

Since the th350 (w/ 9-1/4" tailshaft housing) is only 1/8" shorter than the 700r4, you should be able to reuse the existing driveshaft and yoke.

I was thinking the same thing, a 700 isnt 8" longer than a TH350

TH200/TH200R4- 28.25" from bell housing to tail shaft

Th700R4 30"

4L80E- 32"

Powerglide- 25"

TH350- 27 5/8 or 30 5/8

Th400- 29 to 34"

Powerglide is the shortest, but to me...useless being a 2 speed.

Can you scoot the engine forward any, is there radiator/fan room...maybe run a compact electric fan?

You won't need a TH400 in something that light. A properly sorted and cooled TH350 is fine. Iagree on not even entertaining a PG, they pretty much suck to drive on the street.

The way this thing is set on the frame, same specs as the one I have, the 700R4 we have for a mock up is too long. i think I have a lead on what I need locally.

IIRC, there are different tail shaft and housing lengths available.

350 & 400 came with up to 3 tail housing lengths, each.....vettes always used the shortest, of course, the longest were in the B body cars of the 60-70's....

out of ALL my cars, I have owned maybe ONE on the intermediate length....

I would go with a 200 4R. Same length as a TH350, has a 2.75 1st gear vs the 2.52 of a TH350, and has a .68 OD.
