On this day in 1945...
Three Marines depicted in the photograph, Harlon Block, Franklin Sousley, and Michael Strank, were killed in action over the next few days. The three surviving flag-raisers were Marines Rene Gagnon, Ira Hayes, and sailor John Bradley. These men erected the American Flag at the summit of Mt. Suribach so that “every Marine on this cruddy can see it".
It was raised on February 23, 1945.  at the summit of Mt. Suribachi

Oh HELL yeah!!!!!
My Father was too old for WW2 being born in '05 and my sis in '31 so they called him in to train guys to shoot, must have been a bunch of city boys....I gave the awards/pix/patches to my son..... many guys as he trained, they probably saw action in every major battle, but no way to tell/trace anything like that.....Dad was a crack shot and was a Ohio Guardsman, had a pix of him in his platoon can't recall the year, I circled his face on the glass just for their information.... |
