Not to be mean spirited, but it's a video of a train. What am I missing?

Seriously BB? He put a .gif up so you could sit around and make your own train noises. Can't believe you didn't know that!

You don't need to try to understand Thomas. Just sit there and think about chocolate chip cookies. And stuff...

Pretty sweet.

There were a lot of tan FJs and black Volvos on the road that day.

The golden age of trains. Like the steam locomotives.

Well, just consider that the locomotive by itself weighs about 450,000 lbs and was built in the 1930's and is rocking along faster than the cars next to it

I wonder where they get wear items for those old locomotives
Things like wheels, brake shoes, etc
The company I work for makes wheels for locomotives and freight cars but nothing like what some of that steam era equipment used

And to think someone here gets to play with a life size railroad, and all I had was the model one. I feel bamboozled!!!! That said, my fascination for steam locomotives will never wane. Just fantastic pieces of machinery.

All you need is the proper sized equipment and a skilled machinist / worker. Short of a catastrophic failure, you have the worn piece to use as a reference or most likely an old blueprint.

Wheels are either forged or cast. I don't think anyone is machining a wheel out of block

Last year I worked on a stainless forging that was 38" in diameter and 8" thick. No special / extra costs involved from the mill.

We've gotten similar forgings in various steel alloys too. You can order them from the mill.
