I sold my '05 Corvette 10 years ago.
My son-in-law works at a local used car lot here in town and he called me and said he thinks they have my old car there. It just came in on consignment.
So I drive over there, and sure enough, it was my old car. It's only had 13K put on the odometer in 10 years, for a total of 47K. It's still in excellent shape, a little dirty but it should clean up nice. They are asking 18.5K for it. It's a silver coupe automatic with F55. It's an early C6 with a VIN under 5,000. I showed the car in 34 Western States Corvette Council car shows and won 19 1st in class awards. I'm going to take a trophy or two over to the lot tomorrow and they can throw them in the trunk to help sell the old girl. Fun day. It's not often you get to see a car you sold ten years ago, and it was good to see it's been taken care of. Sad that he didn't drive it more, though. |

Amazing an '05 won any awards. Mine was a piece of shit. Windshield leaked all over my feet, the crank pulley let go, and a plethora of other shit happened. Were the later cars better? Yes. The '05 was a stinking pile of shit for me.

I should explain how WSCC car shows were at the time. They were basically detailing contests. The difference between 1st and 2nd place could be a fingerprint on the glass top or a water spot in the wheel well. Cars of each generation competed only against each other and that was split into classes for stock, modified and competition. I know it sounds silly to most people to clean cars like that, but seeing 100 or so Corvettes cleaned to that level was really quite a sight. It was very competitive and we had lots of fun doing it and raising money for local charities. And I don't need to hear "I don't show my car, I drive it". The two are not mutually exclusive. Much of the time I owned mine it was my daily driver, rain or shine. I put 34K on it in three years. Most of us old guys who were into this are burned out or not physically capable of doing it anymore, and a newer generation has come along and the shows are much more casual now, which is also good. I still drop by a show now and then and reconnect with some of the great people I met back then. Nothing in my life has introduced me to a finer group of people than the ones I met around Corvettes, both in person and on the internet. Except for that one guy. |

I bought a 05 Z/51 6SP. manual new in 04. Only issue I had with it was the roof recall.

I have ran across a couple of my cars I sold to non-family members.
A couple were pretty sad. One was an '83 Camaro F41 Sport coupe. As close as one could get to a Z28 without the stripes. Five liter, H.O., four speed auto, and loaded with sixty three options. Everything except rear disc brakes and T-tops. Bought it with 36k in Jun '96. Sold it in May '02 just turned 60k. Saw it in a Taco Bell about two years later in a city thirty miles away. Door dinged all to hell and nasty interior. Saw my '70 Silver Camaro a year or so after I sold it in Manchester, TN, sixty miles or so from my city. Still looked great but got to talking to the guy and he had removed the Q-Jet and intake and replaced them with a two barrel for better gas mileage. Sheesh. My high school senior year car was a three year old '76 Rally Sport Camaro. Kept it two years and sold it. Guy came in the parts store I was working at and I went out to see it. Outside looked good but the interior was another story. Ashtray was so full it was spilling out onto the console and carpet. My white '84 Z51 car has turned up several times locally. Still looks great and well cared for. |

I did actually buy back a couple of mine. One from a brother, one from a family friend. I did see a couple also up for sale locally online. One guy even used the pics I had posted when he bought it!

Amazing! Still one of my favorite vette related stories that we both bought the same car, on the same day, from the same dealer, and we've still never met in person. I need to make an effort to rectify this.

Update: After a month of the dealer asking 18.5 for it, the consignor took it back. A few weeks ago the dealer bought it from him for 15K. Last week it sold for 19K out the door.

25K. Not a great price but I tried selling it for more for quite awhile. I sold it to a dealership. Simple and convenient. He sold it for 29K out the door. In California about 10% of an OTD price is tax and license. So the dealer made a couple grand or so on it.
So I lost about 24K depreciation in about four years, second owner lost about 14K in ten years. The fun I had with it was worth every penny. Just wasn't room in the retirement budget for a $775 car payment. The lesson here (which didn't surprise me) is if you buy a new Corvette after age 50, you might as well drive it and have fun with it because you'll probably die before you make money on it. |

That or buy a lightly used garage queen after the first owner takes the huge depreciation hit.

Not doggin' ya. I have bought the majority of my cars new, and actually intended on doing a factory order on my C7 but stumbled across an insane deal. Got lucky.
