Schools criticized for using MLK holiday as makeup day
CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools students have missed three days of school this week because of snow and ice.

Now, the students will attend class on Monday, which is Martin Luther King, Jr., Day , and that decision has drawn the criticism of local NAACP chapters.

Kojo Nantambu, president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg NAACP, wrote a letter to Superintendent Peter Gorman, saying, "The NAACP on behalf of the African American and minority community is appalled and thoroughly incensed at Peter Gorman's decision to use the MLK holiday as a snow make up day."

He continued, "We respectfully request that you immediately reconsider and choose another day."

Charlotte City Council member Patrick Cannon also harshly criticized the school district's decision.

"It shows a sign of disrespect even if that's not what is intended," Cannon told the Charlotte Observer. "More consideration should be given."

According to Gorman, state law requires that CMS finish school by June 10, and Monday is the next calendar day available for a makeup day.

"We're really bound by the calendar law. We have to be done by June 10. And to make everything fit without that, we take cascading the next day available. And when we fill that one up, we take the next day available and the next day available," Gorman said.

Gorman says he doesn't want to hold classes on Saturday because attendance is typically low.

CMS has announced the following makeup days for classes that were cancelled Monday-Wednesday:

Monday, Jan. 17 - MLK Day
Feb. 18 - Scheduled teacher workday
Feb. 21 - President's Day

The Rock Hill, S.C., NAACP also complained to local school districts about using Monday as a makeup day.

"This time is set aside to honor a man who devoted his life to the service of mankind and should not be disturbed," said Melvin Poole of the NAACP

My feeling is that Doctor King would be happy to have children being educated on his day of remembrance.

Didn't he fight to have all children educated well? And now the ninnies want the children to stay home?

No one will remember this come June. Class should be held. If a parent wants to keep their kid home, then they may do so.
