Another from the same shoot.

And for the technically curious First, I laid the guitar across the top of a box -containing a new modem I haven't got around to hooking up- in the family room. Then I mounted my speedlite flash on a light stand and put a Fong Lightshere Diffuser that slips over the flash discharge and took a few shots. The results were OK but too much light was spilling all over so I taped a piece of cardboard around the Diffuser to direct the light exactly where I wanted it.

Then I adjusted the angle of the light and the angle I was shooting at to bring out the flame as much as I could. Move this, adjust that, done.

A few months ago I spent several hours reading info and tutorials on the Strobist which got me interested. I don't have an OCF stuff but hope to pick some and get started with it this winter.

I have a little used theater room that is completely dark which should make a nice 'studio' and really want to learn to do this.

Oh, beautiful guitar as well!

These shots were taken in my family room which isn't dark at all.

Studio flash can be intimidating. (It was for me anyway) The bad part about it is you control absolutely everything. The good part about it is you control absolutely everything.

What came as a total surprise to me was that the smallest of movements on the position of your flash can have a huge impact on the shot. I've got the basics down well enough but I have a whole lot to learn yet.

That's interesting. Maybe I should just use my family room as I have some good light from the north to work with. I have much to learn.

I've been one of those guys who puts on his smug face and mentions 'natural light' when OCF comes up in the discussion. Clearly something I need to learn about but have always been intimidated.

Interesting comment about small movements of the light source making big differences. The same applies to camera placement on landscape stuff. Small changes sometimes make or break the the shot.

These guitar shot's are gonna be almost impossible with natural light. Off camera is the way to go on something like this.

This was the only shot I was able to salvage from this afternoon and it isn't very good.

Try again.

Yeah, when I started looking at low key stuff I figured out fast OCF is an absolute requirement. Looking forward to seeing more of the bike.
