I just made a run to the grocery for some half and half. As I pulled in the lot, there was a young man, with his dog, sitting outside with a sign saying, "Help a vet get to Del.". He was about my sons age, who graduates basic training this Thursday at Ft. Jackson, SC.
Normally I don't pay much attention to people with signs. I figure they're just panhandling for some easy money. But as a cold wind hit me in the face, something got me. I left the grocery, went to the convenience store down the street, grabbed a large cup of coffee and a chicken wrap. I went back to the store, stopped, gave him the coffee, wrap, and a couple bucks, and talked to the young man.
As I was talking to him, a lady stopped and called him to her car to give him a fiver. You could see the look of real shame in his eyes as he limped over to her. He said, "It's so degrading accepting money like that." I told him that once he gets back on his feet, he'll remember the kindness of strangers and re-pay it back.
I'm the first to admit that I can't stand panhandlers who play on peoples good nature to make money. But if you see someone, especially a veteran, who you think needs a helping hand, just go with it. You never know folks. You just never know.............

You can always tell the panhandlers who claim to be vets, who actually are vets...they present differently than the posers. They wont be out there in any kind of military dress..where the posers will be. they wont be clean shaven obviously..but they generally keep themselves up better. their signs will be well worded and legible.

Our veterans should not be having to beg for food and money....it just aint right.

I watched a real vet slap a scammer right out of his wheel-chair, and threatened to kill him if he saw him again. Scammer grabbed his chair and ran off pushing the chair. I didn't get a chance to talk to the vet (Vietnam), but the scuttlebutt was the first clue was the way the scammer sat in, and used the chair. And the dead give away was the the guy said he served in a division and location that didn't exist.
