Since I don't know exact water depth, lets just use 70' water depth ( figuring 60' running depth plus 10' clearance.

A 5:1 scope ( ratio of water depth to anchor line) would be absolute minimum and a 7:1 would be better.

So that would call for anywhere from 350' to 490' of anchor line. Once that drops, then you have the ship that is 984' in length that has to change from forward momentum to bow towards anchor while the stern swings around AND then the anchor must dig in to stop the loaded ship.

It is not going to stop on a dime and give you change.

Considering that they went from close to "oh shit" in a couple of ship lengths, that was not a viable option.

All true. A Yaddie driveway rock would have stopped it.

I would think it's a hydraulic system that should at least have a modicum of reverse force. I keep hearing "propulsion issue", but I'm really wondering if the whole system just failed.

They were having problems with it and when they called tech support, Steve in India suggested to reboot the system. That's why the lights went out.

What is confabulation?

Quote:
Confabulation is a symptom of various memory disorders in which made-up stories fill in any gaps in memory.

German psychiatrist Karl Bonhoeffer coined the term “confabulation” in 1900. He used it to describe when a person gives false answers or answers that sound fantastical or made up.

While this condition may at first sound like lying, confabulation only occurs when you have a condition that affects your memory. This is why confabulation is often described as “honestly lying.”

Someone with confabulation has memory loss that affects their higher reasoning. They subconsciously create stories as a way to conceal their memory loss. They aren’t aware that they aren’t telling the truth. They don’t have any doubt about the things they are saying, even if those around them know the story is untrue.

Sometimes a person with confabulation will only make up small stories to fill gaps in their memory. Doctors call these “confabulations of embarrassment.” Others may tell elaborate stories, which is known as “fantastic confabulation.”

Confabulation isn’t a disorder itself. It’s a symptom of an underlying disorder. Doctors are still working to define confabulation and their understanding of the brain changes that cause it to occur.

What causes confabulation?
A variety of conditions can result in confabulation. These include memory disorders, injuries, and mental health disorders. As a result, doctors haven’t identified a specific cause. They do know that most people who have symptoms of confabulation usually have damage in two areas of the brain: the frontal lobes and the corpus callosum. The frontal lobe is known for its role in memory.

Examples of conditions that can cause confabulation include:

anosognosia for hemiplegia, or denial of paralysis
Anton’s syndrome, or denial of blindness
Capgras syndrome, or the belief that an imposter has replaced a loved one
Korsakoff syndrome
memory disorders, such as dementia and Alzheimer’s disease
schizophrenia
split-brain syndrome
traumatic brain injury
Young children may also engage in confabulation.

There's speculation that contaminated fuel was a huge part of the problem. It makes sense, but there's no way to tell right now.

Interesting that the power poles in that waterway appear to have fairly robust islands with walls that look like they are intended to deflect a vessel.

Power line towers - Yes
Bridge - No

I agree with you, very poor engineering and design.

The ones that surround The Sunshine Skyway are MUCH MORE adequate to withstand a ship's ramming.

I am not big on gov spending my money, but it should be standard to have sufficient bumpers and island around bridge spans, all lacking spans can be retrofitted.

The point I was making is that you can see the supports for the bridge and they have essentially nothing around them. Lives are at stake on a bridge, not a cell tower or power line tower. It's the airbag argument. "What if it doesn't work?". Well, what if it does? It's better than doing nothing.

Unfornituely you just mentioned a very real part of engineering and law making, its called feel good legislation. (makes a lot of noise and accomplishes nothing substantial!)
