Been there - and its a strange, strange bit of Americana, it was supposed to be losing inches of land every year and in dire straights when we visited like 10 years ago. At one point it was predicted to be gone by 2035. It was a temporary home for slaves obtaining freedom at one point and during the depression fishing in the locale was one of the most lucrative professions in all of the US based on the Menhaden fish industry.
