Default Anyone else notice businesses charging for CC use ?

I’ve ran into a lot of places that are charging up to 3.5% if you use a credit card. Even the local Chevy dealer puts that on there for service or parts. Looks like we are going back to cash and debit cards.

Debit card is my primary 99% of the time. I've had $80 in my wallet for months now for some emergency bs. I only use a CC for online or something that could be a problem.

It is ridiculous for businesses to do that.
I absorbed CC fees, and it didn’t make a difference in the bottom line.

If a shitty business owner thinks it is a better idea to charge a tiny fee that everyone complains about vs just adding 3% to the price that nobody will notice.

Same here, CC is just for the internet and everything else is cash or debit cards. My stores had always charged 2% extra for Amex and most the dealers I had were adding 1% to 3% for using a CC when I retired in 2021.

I notice more businesses offering a discount for cash or check. 3.5% is 3.5% of sales.

I'm getting a humidifier installed in my house this week, saving about $30 with check vs. CC.

I think many years ago when I started my business the CC companies had a stipulation in the contract that said you couldn’t charge less for cash.

It's illegal in MA to charge more for using a credit card.

However.... it's just fine to offer a cash discount. Liberal logic in action.

And yes, I have been seeing it more often lately.

Bidenomics.

Is it actually a law or a stipulation in the CC contract?

Mass law.

I do remember back in the day that merchant contracts with card companies prohibited the practice. Apparently no longer.

Texas probably has something similar. Most stations have a different cash v. credit price.

A lot of gas stations in PA, the mom and pop stores mostly, have a cash price and a debit/credit price.

A local bar that we have been to a number of times charged me 3.5% to use my credit card the last time we were there. That 3.5% got deducted from the tip. Oh, did I mention, "the last time we were there"?

Something tells me that you're not a fan of these surcharges.

Last place that tried to charge the surcharge got to wonder why a customer with $1500 worth of goods left them at the register and walked out. Went down the way and bought the same stuff and saved 3%. Call me cheap but it is the principle of the matter.
The sad part was I was using my Debit/Credit card coming right out of my checking account. We don't use the debit function. Got burnt on it at a store once and won't do it again.

Same thing happened to us at a restaurant we like. We dealt with it the same exact way, and don't bother going there any more either. Most people pay with a card at restaurants these days, so I think they are shooting themselves in the foot for doing it.

There are a few gas stations here that do a cash/credit price difference, but that has been happening for years.

up to 4% is normal here.
I think they charge 4% whether it is a credit or debit card too.

went out to dinner last Saturday and they brought the ticket and 4% was already added on.
No idea if they would have taken it off if you paid cash or debit.
Likely only if you asked them to do so.

95% of my business revenue is paid via CC. I don't add a surcharge, it's the cost of doing business.

I think it's a dumb practice because handling cash is a PITA. The costs of handling it must be far more than what the CC companies charge.

In my business I give clients three options. I tell them that I prefer Zelle, and would rather take a check then process a credit card. I don't charge a fee.
