Mid 80's Monte SS jones
So lately I have been coveting the 80's monte SS. I remember when they first came out I just thought they were a clean looking yet not sissified looking car. There was one on the Charleston SC Craigslist a while back that I would have jumped all over if I had the funds. I always liked the black with Marion interior, T-tops and alloys. That's what this one was. Anybody ever own one and have impressions they would like to share? I know they aren't particularly fast with that 'HO' 305 but I have other cars to go fast in if I want to.

Just curious, why not go with the Buick Grand National? That's the one everyone went nuts over.

Although they are faster and just damn cool looking, I dont like the sound of the v6, it sounds exactly like my old tacoma. Looks like a beast, drives like a beast, sounds like crap. Monte SS, looks about the same, sounds great with a good dual exhaust on it, 305 engine meh, yank it and drop in a 350 if it bothers me that much. Just my personal opinions.

I had a friend in the Marines that had one. It was just a nice car, alittle flashy, not real fast but just a sharp looking car. His was white with the blue interior, I prefer the black with Maroon interior and T-tops.

I had an '88 waiting on the Sold lot for me, black with gold trim (only year for that combo) and radio delete, but a couple of weeks before I had some words with the nice folks at United VA Bank (they were in the wrong), and they denied my loan app. I was putting 30% down, and they turned down my loan. NO other bank would touch me either after that.
Had to let it go to this old lady that could barely see over the steering wheel. STILL would like to have one! |

my buddy stephen's 88 monte SS ( nicknamed 'the full monte'....yeah. i know.)
its a driveable project in progress deal, he rolls it daily and we mess with it as time and funds allow--like real hotrodders have done from day one. its still got the 305 but we spiced it up with a 268EX comp cam, a geardrive, a performerEPS intake, and a 600 edelbrock. he also crammed in a B&M megashifter and a bang-screech shift kit. the big-n-little centerlines give it that redneck 80's look, which i think is PERFECT. he loves this car, and his son stephen III who is only 6 is already making noises about wanting it for his highschool hotrod. sounds like a plan !! |
