Last week I was at my Rolex AD (Authorized Dealer) picking up one of my watches from a service. It'd been ten years since the last one and the reserve power was starting to slip. As I was waiting I spotted an Oyster Perpetual with a purple ("Red Grape" in Rolex parlance) dial sitting in the case and immediately thought of my wife who if she had her way would decorate our entire home in the color.

Yesterday I took her along and we returned to the AD. And just as I suspected, when she saw the watch? "Ooooooh. Purple!" That settled that.

As for the details on the photo - I used my 100mm Macro lens and bounced window light onto the watch. Just before I took the shot I lit the lume on the dial with a flashlight. The red background is simply red cloth I picked up at the dollar store. For a 5 minute setup I think it turned out OK.

Yeah, I know; watches are stupid I have an iPhone blah blah blah.

I thought the dial may have been a bit dark too. Here, I applied a radial filter to the center of the dial with a big feather.

Sometimes it’s hard to beat a simple, non-complicated Rolex. Here’s my Explorer I.

Very similar of course but you’ve got the Mercedes hand. And the case is the right size. The 42mm Explorer II just doesn’t do a lot for me. I’ll keep my 40mm.

Wore the Tag Heuer Searacer today. Also have a Doxa 600T in the rotation.

My Dad put this on my wrist about 60 years ago. Not an expensive watch... maybe one someone traded for some gasoline at his service station, but it's worth far more to me than my Omega Planet Ocean.

Another simple, but elegant Rolex that I like to wear in a suit is my green Milgauss. It’s a little thicker than the Explorer I, but that green sapphire crystal.....
