Default 3D printers and software

Anyone played with 'em?

Believe it or not, for all my high tech experience, I've never had a need to consider 3d printing but I have a project I'm working on that would be easier if I did.

I've got the ender3 machine. Mom has the large version of the SnapMaker (much better quality). What do you need to know about the software since there are several options to choose from?

I hear people have been printing 3D guns on the cheap and selling them to gun buy back programs and making a tidy little profit.

I have TONS of experience with pc board CAD programs (such as EagleCAD and DipTrace) but have never really had a reason to learn 3D CAD. So I guess simpler is better for now?

Yes and remember, simpler is not the same as cheaper when it comes to the machines. There are plenty of 3D CAD programs available online (kinda like how PIXLR is available through the web).

For the most part, Cura and the other programs used to work with the machines are free and there are plenty of online tutorials and YT vids out there that teach everything about it.

A guy did that in Houston. After the City was forced to buy up a bunch of single shot, basically one use 'guns,' they refused to buy them in subsequent "buy back programs."

I use quotes, because it's the dumbest shit I have ever seen. The city of Houston didn't sell anyone any gun, but they're going to buy them back? Really? Most people sell useless rusty junk, although people that stand outside and offer to pay cash for guns usually come across some decent stuff worth buying for a premium on what the city is offering.

We had an eight foot bed machine at work. Thought about it but have not pulled trigger.

Indeed! I spent an hour over lunch and played with Onshape (online free) and already have my .stl file. Fairly intuitive stuff!

Much easier than I thought, although admittedly the part I need is pretty simple too

I've got a Prusa MK3S. I've printed a bunch of stuff with it. I had an Ender 3 before I got the Prusa.

Ended up buying one of these

I like that it's enclosed as well. Don't need a cat messing with it

Being enclosed helps the printing by keeping temp even.
Bastards are all noisy.
