My father spent thousands of dollars on these structures, but they were riddled with termites and had poor structural stability. In 1985, he attempted to sell many of them but could only get 35-50% of the original price.

Either my wife and I are "weird", or you're painting with a remarkably broad brush. I have a guess which it is.

I shave in the shower, too. Point still stands that men aren't going to shave sitting down. As to the wimmenz......I gave my anecdotal experience and extrapolated. If we had more VB ladies here, maybe it would be worthy of a poll. I'd still bet most women sit down to put on their makeup, the whole point of vanities and little benches. I could be wrong.

The vast majority of women now put their make-up on standing up leaning over the sink to see the mirror.

A vanity is an anachronism throwing back to when upper crust "ladies" had maids. Oh, and dressing gowns. They wore the dressing gowns when changing between morning dress, afternoon receiving garb to receive callers, and then dressing for dinner. They sat there and let the maids dress them and put the appropriate jewelry on.

We have a built-in vanity in our old wreck of a home. Like a desk with drawers where you can put all the junk, sit down and put on the pretty face, blow dry hair or whatever they do. She uses it. Probably the exception.

Yep. I got it mixed up. And I have a 1930's Armoire in the spare bedroom that I've had 30+ years so I should have known better. Armoires were used in homes before closets were standard. Thanks!!
