Default Flour shortage?

We frequently make our own bread, using a bread machine, and do some other baking as well. We're running low on a few types of flour, and apparently there's none to be found in stores or online. Same thing with yeast, although I did see an Amazon seller offering a 2-pack of the small jars of Fleishman's yeast for $55, plus $14.99 shipping.

Now yesterday, a loaf of whole wheat bread failed miserably in our bread machine. Tried another loaf today, same result, so I'm thinking the machine has a problem. No replacement machines available anywhere! (of the type we want, anyway)

So after everyone bought all of the toilet paper, rice & beans that they could fit in their houses, they've moved on to baking & making bread?

This is quite a time we're living in...

Yep. Shelves are empty in our grocery stores. “They” are telling us to get two weeks worth of groceries but there is very little meat and it is limited to one or two packs. 😷

Yep the hoarders emptied the flour and sugar out weeks ago here. I need brown sugar myself.

Sounds like now would be a good time to learn how to make sourdough starter. You can get flour here in Missouri pretty easily. At the very least check some of you health-food type places. They will typically have some refrigerated "organic" fancy flour that is more expensive than your typical Pillsbury stuff and people probably haven't hoarded it yet.

Also you don't need a bread machine to make great bread. You can make a no-knead style bread using 1/4 tsp yeast that will blow away whatever comes out of your typical bread machine.

I have a jar of yeast in my garage fridge that I bought in bulk at Sam's Club (a 16 oz foil package of it) like five years ago and it's still viable. Which is pretty amazing actually.

Mrs Flex makes bread at home too.

Hasn't been able to find bread flour or yeast since this whole thing started.

There is a sour dough bread recipe that uses instant potato flakes in the starter.

Stores were out of flour a week or so ago here too. We didn't have any, and my wife wanted a bag, but none to be found. She said she wanted to make our son his favorite cookies, and mail them to him, so she HAD to have flour. I found a spendy bag of "organic" flour at the store, and bought it. The extra $5 was worth it to stop the complaining.

I frequent restaurants here since I'm lazy to cook. Or at least used too. The credit card I use to get a % back on each charge previously looked like a restaurant list of the San Fernando Valley but now has gone blank.

I didn't go down the flour aisle yesterday, as I didn't need it. But I did see they had a huge display of pallets of TP at the back of the store. Seriously, if you were anywhere near that part of the store, you couldn't miss it. I think the store is trying to send the message "don't panic, THERE WILL BE PLENTY OF TP!!!!!", but I think the sheeple are just not listening.

If I start a rumor that Q-Tips will clean out the 'Rona from your nose, will the sheeple clean that out too?

I have no doubt that if that got any kind of widespread dissemination, they most certainly would.

The sad part is that I would either have to present to my wife an impressive inventory of Q-tips that we already have on hand, or I would be on another pilgrimage within the week, so, please don't. The third alternative is to listen to the panicking and hand-wringing associated with her feeling we don't have what we need. Experience has shown that my resistance to this lasts about 48 hours, so there really are only two eventual outcomes.

The good news is I have a shit load of Q-tip like things of varying lengths that I use to clean out my dog's ears, so my inventory would probably pass muster. SHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Well if you're secret stash doesn't work out...

Amazon had qtips when I was poking around this morning.
I luckily picked a box up locally a few weeks ago.

Thanks, but except for the Tylenol, I haven't bought anything we don't need, nor increased stock of anything above normal levels. If I start making a habit of buying stuff we don't need, I will feel guilty about laughing at all the people hoarding TP. We don't want that, do we?

I'm curious, q-tips? Why? You shouldn't use them to "clean" your ears out, because they just shove stuff deeper and mixes it with cotton fibers. That chore is easily (quite easily) done with warm water and an ear bulb thing in the shower. Takes two minutes or so once every six months to a year.

So then that leaves using them for, what, arts and crafts?
