Oh Holy Hell!!
Will it ever end with the stupidity of the seller?? So, I'm scrubbing and sanitizing the kitchen and tucked away in an upper cabinet is a savings bond and their kids social security cards.! Called our lawyer, yes, he was amazed too, going to drop them off at his office in a few minutes. WTF is wrong with these people? |

Is the savings bond a bearer bond? Is it worth anything?

Antique sewing machines, gorgeous fur coats, valuable family documents etc. First week in the house we're in now I found a 2K diamond ring she left in the medicine chest of the guest bath. It was a very nice ring (prob D-F in color and at least a VS1) Called our realtor and it took her a week to stop by and pick it up. In other not so surprising news we found out that she divorced her husband and got the house, the kid, and most of the money. He's still living with his parents.... Scott

Scott, what do you normally do with the stuff left behind?
OK, you gave that ring back, but you could have sold it for some $$$. What about the rest of the stuff you've found? Here's what we've found thus far: Master bedroom: 2 night tables, dresser, wardrobe Bedroom 1: Brass headboard, TV Bedroom 2: TV Bathroom: Trashcan, purple tie, pictures Bedroom 3: Dunno, didn't go in there... Laundry room: Clothes in the dryer Kitchen: A ton of crap - cups, bowls, dishes, cookie jars (should check inside them), prescription medicine, kitchen towels, oven mitts, kid's SS cards, etc. Dining room: Huge, fugly, framed artwork Hallway: Personalized welcome mat Downstairs bathroom: (unused) Cleaning supplies Den: books on the bookcase, toys in the cabinet, pruning shears Family room: floor lamp Foyer: decorative "art" Garage: There's stuff in the garage, I just forget what I'm sure I've forgotten something. I think the only room they didn't leave anything in, that I remember, is the formal living room. We'll probably rent a dumpster and load everything in there. |

sounds like our place when we moved in.
dryer full of clothes. boxes of stuff (including their land line phones - box went to the trash before they called asking about them), about 50 gallons of paint, and over the years we've found about $2 in loose change here and there in the house. |

Being self employed, it's an outstanding write off without the headaches of selling all the junk. You probably have enough that they'll come pick it up for you. It's like free trash removal you get to deduct. Scott

I always kept the really good stuff, sold the so-so stuff and trashed the junk. I would not have given the SS Cards back. They could have got big money for them at the corner cell phone place in the city. Seriously, I give nothing back. Everything that I took in just offset the cost of refitting the place. |

My Mom and her friend Linda are taking the kids clothing and plates and jars to a church that will give them to people who needs them. Not worrying about a small tax deduction, I just want it out of my way so I can scrub this house down.
I wouldn't feel right about disposing of the kids SS cards, they can't help who their parents are. I know I did the right thing bringing them to our lawyer. The secretary actually said she would personally deliver them to their lawyer. So, I can sleep with a clear conscious . |
