Default How many cars does it take to have a "collection"?

I don't consider 3 Corvettes to be a collection, but I will accumulate several more while I'm of working age. GWiz will inherit all of them. What say VBOT on the official count of cars to be a "collection".

I would have to say 4-5 under an actual garage......not under some car cover in a back yard, or worse......

I may need a bigger garage, but I still have the option of adding a 4-post lift to the existing setup and putting a 5th car in there.

Having said that, that's far from happening, as the 2021 won't stick around. It will be replaced by a 2024 "ish" C8 Z06, and when that's paid for, I'll work on #4 . I have time. In the C8 run, my gut tells me that I might end up with a C8 Z and a C8 ZR1, but time will tell.

Going toward the other end of the spectrum, I may try and pick up a 1992 Black C4....my first Corvette. Do a resto-mod, blah blah blah. I could build one of those to modern standards, and get the nostalgia to go with it. It would be a head count, and the amount invested to make a really cool car would be far less than any of these C8's I'm considering.

"and ____ will inherit xxxxx"

having just closed out my Dad's estate, I can only tell you that you cannot control what happens after you are gone. you can express wishes, leave clear directions, have long talks in the years before, but that's it.

maybe she meets a great guy, and decides to go another direction in life (maybe be a stay at home mom to 8 kids), and all things car related fade away. or she decides that she's rather have $$$, and not have to feed and care for all these old cars.

my Dad said, in his final weeks, that he could have hunted more. well, Dad, too late now. I doubt i'll hunt again, but I have all his gear.

I have two vehicles sitting in my driveway unstarted since 2017.
And two vehicles in my garage that just sit.

As soon as I can find a new compound to move to I will have dozens of cars that I just let sit.

I want to buy tons of C3’s through C5’s on the cheap and then the waiting game starts till I’m rich.

I would say that is a collection. To me, a collection is two or more cars that sit most of the time. I can understand why you don't think of them as a collection or of yourself as a collector yet. I was the same way when friends would call me a watch collector. It finally got to a point where I couldn't deny it.

As soon as there is one more car in the garage than there are drivers in the house it is a collection. As soon as one car cannot fit under cover it becomes an obsession.
Or in my case simply the fact we have no garage at all.

My dad has 4 vehicles comprising the collection he has put together at his redneck museum. Only one runs but they were all "great deals. All we have to do is rebuild everything on them."

I refuse to polish turds and they are still rusting away in his garage
(POS C4) and back yard (2000's Blazer that he though could pull my 13K Lb boat, '72 El Camino POS, and a 2000's truck that is on it's last leg). Meanwhile he bitches everybody else gets nice cars but not him.... and can't understand if he quit wasting time and money on junk he could get something nice and not have to hear me tell him I won't touch his collection of junk and waste MY time on the weekends.

Women. They hit 40 and if they have kids they’re pissed off they’re not running IMB. If they’re running IBM they’re pissed off the never had kids.

How many diploma’s end up a bookmark in Betty Crocker cookbooks? Quite a few.

I have been a collector since my teenager years - military relics, toys, motorcycles, cars, and other things. If someone walked up today and offered to buy out everything...I wouldn't hesitate. Things I thought would bring me some enjoyment later in life haven't. I can't tell you how many estate sales I've been to and looked at someones life and what brought them a little enjoyment only to be a burden and hindrance to their heirs.

Dad had a large collection of animal heads, about 30 or so.

i made about 20 calls to various places, no one was interested in them. us kids had no place for any of them at our houses. figured it would cost about $5k to pack and ship them if I had a place for them (maybe in my shop with 12' ceilings). Dad had assumed that I could sell the mess for 20-40k. wrong.

I ended up giving them to a local artist, so he could use them for life studies of animals. At least they didn't get tossed in the trash. I did keep the bear rugs, they are still packed in duffle bags, I don't have any wall space to hang them.

Just because it consumed your time and money and energy, does not mean that anyone else will value or appreciate it later on when you are gone.

Boy how true is this. My mother is 84 years old now. (in good health thank goodness) After my father passed in ‘19 we had a family meeting outlining
her will, assets, etc. It’s not easy telling her you really have no interest in her personal belongings. You know, dolls, all kinds of Irish knickknacks, this damn Christmas village she’s been collecting for 35 years and what not. This shit it important to her yet holds virtually no value to me whatsoever.

Ugh.

just saw a story today about Erin Andrews (ESPN hottie reporter), and how she is now 35, and undergoing another round of IVF.

dear, your biological clock is ticking hard, and will soon expire. your best shot at being a mommy was about 14 years ago.

I think it’s a bit silly when relatives want to hand over truckloads of stuff they’ve acquired that has no utility for the person receiving it. My wife and I are young but have agreed to not accumulate a bunch of crap to force on our children.
