Hot Wheels Shelf
I have been collecting 1/64 scale Corvette model for a few years now. I didn’t have a good place to display them until I noticed an idea in a magazine where someone used a 1973-78 Chevrolet pickup grill as a display case.
I had a damaged grill from my 1990 K-Blazer that looked like a good candidate after epoxying some of the damage. There wasn’t quite enough room on each square for a model car to rest on, so I used small pieces of Masonite glued to the underside of each to extend the depth of each spot. Then I covered the area with sticky-back black felt. I hung it on the wall in my rec room and filled it with models. When I filled the grill up and ran out of space, my wife found a replacement grill on eBay for me. I made a 2nd grill shelf from it. This one didn’t have a Chevy emblem in the center, so I glued a silver disk from a used dismantled computer hard drive to the center and mounted a C4 Corvette emblem to it (The full-sized Corvette I own is a 1995 black C4 coupe.) I have a few models larger than 1/64 so I hot melt glued a wood shelf on the top of each grill. I recently purchased some “road” tape from the Hot Wheels department of the local top store that I plan on laying down on the top shelves to simulate a road with center lines. My wife thinks I need to quit collecting when I fill the 2nd grill with cars. Only time will tell. You can also see this on page 115 of the January 2019 issue of Vette Vues Magazine. |

If she tells you to quit your hobby you need to trade her in.

I splurged for the HW rack. I have a '74 C10. They are so popular now parts, grills, etc.. are hard to find and bring $100 or more. I collect trucks, Bone Shakers, '55 Gassers, and a few other if they look cool and only cost a $1. I don't pay the stupid ebay prices for them. It is compact to hold nearly 50 cars and I have it flushed mounted on the wall

I collected Hot Wheels and Johnny Lightnings for a few years. Still buy one every now and then. Last time I counted I had over four thousand but have given away probably half of them over the years. Still have maybe 2k or so, enough to fill a closet.
