I'm truly sorry to hear this. Before our chihuahua passed away, she was nearly blind, but could "sense" my presence and still crawl up to my chest and snooze.
Hope your doggy hangs tough.

The more I know people, the more I appreciate my dog. Serious.

Damn Jeff..... sorry to hear about Bandit. Very hard to know when to let them go, but it is just as hard to know they are hurtin' or scared.

Bandit is the same....Just a great dog..... He seems to be getting used to the blindness....
I think Dixie may be right. Once he masters the nose thing, he'll be ok, as long as the diabetes lets him.

So sorry to hear about your Schnauzer. They're wonderful pets.
Both your Schnauzer's have had diabetes? We have a female Schnauzer that will be 12 years old next month and her eyesight is starting to go.

Don't forget the structure of a dog's nose gives it a sense of smell that is thousands of times better than a human being's.

A dog's nose has two hundred million nasal olfactory receptors. Each receptor detects and identifies the minute odor molecules that are constantly flying off different objects.

Dogs can sense odors at concentrations nearly 100 million times lower than humans can. They can detect one drop of blood in five quarts of water!

Sniffing the bare sidewalk may seem crazy, but it yields a wealth of information to your dog, whether it's the scent of the poodle next door or a whiff of the bacon sandwich someone dropped last week.

And they can hear gooder'n a mofo, too!
^This. Dogs can adjust to blindness far better than we can. They rely on smell as their primary sense. As long as your dog is not in pain, they can have many quality years left. They will still know their best friend (you) is always there.

This true. Don't move any of the furniture either. Spike walks along the edges of carpets.

We bought nightlights for all of the common walk ways, hoping he can at least see the shadows....

This is why Stevie Wonder always stays at Holiday Inn. The rooms are all laid out the same.
My daughter had a little poodle that was blind and deaf for years, and when she would bring her to our house the dog would wander around sniffing for a few minutes to get her bearings. You could tell she knew where she was and then she would get around just fine.

Jeff, I've been out of town, so I'm just now catching up on threads. Your doggie's situation just breaks my heart. I know you and your wife will do the right thing...but it's just hard. Prayers sent, my friend.
