MMA - The Best of Pride

For those of you who never got the opportunity to see PRIDE Fighting Championships or better known as PRIDE you can get that chance tonight on Spike TV, beginning at 10pm ET / PT they are showing "The Best of Pride" where you can see fighters like wanderlei Silva, Nog, Fedor, Takanori Gomi, Anderson Silva and other stars in their prime and original fight setting. For those that don't know, PRIDE was a Japanese based MMA fight sport utilizing a ring instead of cage with a little different rules. Stomps and soccer kicks to the head while on the ground were allowed just to name one. I actually liked PRIDE better than the UFC , it was a little more violent and the subs seem to be a little slicker. PRIDE did not test for steroids so you get some amped up fighters but that didn't always work to the advantage. This is where Cro Cop got his MMA start and he was a beast in PRIDE. Most of the world champions fought there and at one time it was the premiere fight organization in the world.

Hosted by Kendra Perez, “The Best of PRIDE Fighting Championships” makes its long-awaited premiere on Spike TV tonight at 10pm ET / PT, and fans will start to re-live the most memorable moments of the Japanese fight organization with an action-packed lineup that includes the game’s premier athletes. This first installment will kick off with the torrid 2003 rematch between heated rivals Wanderlei Silva and Quinton “Rampage” Jackson. But that’s just for starters, as UFC Hall of Famer Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell shows off what he can do in a ring when he battles Alistair Overeem in another 2003 showdown.

Recently signed to the UFC, international lightweight superstar Takanori Gomi will show US fans why he’s long been considered one of the best 155-pounders on the planet when he takes on Charles “Crazy Horse” Bennett.

And speaking of superstars, pound for pound great Anderson Silva collides with former UFC welterweight champ Carlos Newton, and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua squares off against former UFC heavyweight champ Kevin Randleman.

One of the most popular MMA organizations in the world during its ten years of operation (1997-2007), PRIDE Fighting Championships, based in Japan, featured world class mixed martial arts artists in some of the most dramatic bouts in the early history of the sport. Spike TV will re-broadcast the best of these bouts in “The Best of Pride Fighting Championships,” premiering Sunday, January 11, 2010 at 11pm ET/PT.
