Brush with discomfort
Today at work I go to the side of these peoples house and pop open their cable box and see the lines are in disarray. Being the thorough cable loser I am I thrust my hand in to the box to grab the splitter so I can begin to organize the mess. When suddenly by chance I see something on the back of the splitter and quickly reverse my grasp and draw my hand back. Out from the back of the splitter comes this bad mamma-jamma!
Yep, that's a giant Black Widow! I consider it a brush with discomfort as I could have gone to the hospital to avoid death had I been bitten but I'm pretty sure it still would have sucked pretty bad.

Good miss...
When I lived in Albuquerque we used to check the window frames everynight before getting into bed. Those critters were everywhere... |

Nothing a can of WD-40 and a lighter can't fix. Honestly, I would have been doing the HEEBIE JEEBIE Dance for a few hours afterwards.

They actually have to chew on you for a bit to do real damage. It's not like a sting...if that makes it better...

I took it's picture silly. Then I closed the box and told the customer they were all set.
I see them all the time in the cable boxes out by the street but they are always tiny, this thing was huge so I wasn't gonna mess with it.

We must have some kind of breeding ground in my back yard. We know exactly where to find one at just about any given time. We have a corner of our yard where we keep landscape timbers for our garden and firewood for the house, they love to hange out there. I have even found them in winter in kind of the same way you found that one. I carried in a load of firewood once and my daughter and I were playing a board game, one with a belly nearly as big as a dime crawled right across the Monopoly board! We were watching TV and both looked down just in time to see it making it's way right at my daughters hand. I grabbed my fireplace glove and picked it up and threw it in the fire. They are poisonous (as everyone knows) but they aren't as bad as you think. They can do damage like a recluse but their bite is pretty painful, unlike a brown recluse. My neighbor had a grandson that got bit when he was fifteen.

Crawled a few houses in my day Munch , know the feeling . Best one I can recall was a service call many years ago in Concord Ca . crawling under a house with RG-6 in one hand and a flashlight in the other ... Came face to face with a snake... freaked out tried to stand up in about 30" of space ... 15 stiches and a clean pair of shorts ... back to work .

A buddy of mine is very scared of spiders. One evening years ago we were in his garge messing with is car (a really trick 3000gt twin turbo) and a big fat spider starts walking toward him. He hells and hits it with a ratchet. The thing explodes and thousands of little baby spipders go all over the place. I've never seen a man scream like a little girl and get up and run that fast!

Meh...they don't really bother me. We have tons of mud dauber wasps in the area and I just let 'em build their nests. They don't bother humans and they prey on black widow spiders.
A golden garden spider made a nest in one of my windows. She was huge....just left her alone and she was there all summer. Very cool. Died a few weeks ago.

Spiders don't bother me, I just don't need the hassle of going to the hospital if I get bit. I love those Garden Spiders, we had one with a huge web next to our pool that I'd go watch all the time until a big storm came one night and he disappeared.
