Out of respect for my wife and the thought of what could happen, I did not have a pistol in my house until both children were out at university.
Kids find the strangest ways of getting their hands on things, so I just took that out of the equation.
I made up for lost time with the quickness though...

That video can be interpreted in many ways, the first being that it's a gun control propaganda ploy.
Meh...... It is what it is.

Jeff, you did the right thing by not keeping a gun where a kid could get to it, especially one who has such unbelievably poor judgement as this kid in the video.

Alternately one could keep a gun where a kid couldn't get to it, such as a safe or on one's person.

Unimpressive.

The gun grabbers will like it.

Ya, I know, but did I trust myself to lock the safe every time?
To this day, I'll get home and my safe will be open on the rare occasion.

Wow that's a dumb video.

I know let's create a video encouraging kids to take guns to school! Then the parents will be so afraid of their brainwashed kids, they'll get rid of their guns!

I dunno...
My first impression was of the totally irresponsible gun owner.
My second impression was that the kid is a total puzzy.

I too considered chastising the owner for not locking the gun up, however i'm not so sure that's where my issues lie. At that age, the kid should have been trained on that firearm and known how to safely handle it. Honestly he's old enough to have some access to firearms as long as he's proven he knows how to act.

There was no fatherly figure in that video, what if the gun was left out for self defense against an estranged person of the household? Wouldn't the kid need access too?

Many of my friends by that age had reasonably easy access to firearms, and none of us brought guns to school...err well into school I'm sure there were a few hunting rifles in the parking lot.

Hell my closest childhood friend had a hidden part in his closest where his dad kept their guns....including several fully automatic weapons....yup the class 3 weapons were in my friends closet...did we ever have any problems? Nope.

I can tell you that every friend I had growing up played with their Dad's guns and took them out to show us. One of my friends had found his Dad's 22 rifles that he had removed the firing pins from. A vise, a finish nail and a file and we were in business. Used pliers to pull the bullets off and then carved the casing into a candle, making wax bullets. We would go down in the basement shooting cans. We were maybe 10 or 11. Kids are more industrious than parents give them credit for.
One of the scariest things I ever experienced was hanging at a friend's house in his basement with a group of people and they were playing with his Dad's guns. This kid points a 44 Magnum at me from about 5' away and says, "go ahead, make my day". He pulls the trigger and the whole room shook. Despite what you see on movies and TV, a gunshot indoors is very loud and disorienting, especially a f'ng 44 magnum at point blank range.
I thought I was dead. The concussion, the smoke, was unreal. The kid with the gun turned white as a sheet and was shaking. My other buddy that handed him the gun starts laughing his ass off, he had loaded blanks in it. I was pissed beyond belief, almost got into a fight but I think I was in shock.

GMAFB! If one of my kids grabbed up one of my firearms, first off, they better hope they are in police custody, because it's me they have to worrry about. My oldest son could care less about shooting, but always enjoys it when he does go, but he could take it or leave it. My youngest likes to shoot and is proficient. Guns have never been a secret around my house. They know that anytime they want to shoot with my supervision, that they can. Also, once I clear a weapon, they are allowed to handle them. It was the same with my Dad growing up, and I never once took a gun to school, and knew how to handle them.

If a kid is a psycho, he will go to no length to get his hand on a gun whether it belongs to the parents or not. Sandy Hook is an example, and I'm so skeptical that, that even happened, it's not funny. Way too many inconsistencies.

The commercial is total BS, even for the gun grabbing crowd. Guns are a tool like anything else. Hell, are we going to over regulate a Chevrolet now that the rag heads are plowing down people left and right because of their "jihad". What utter shit.....

The producer of the Video needs to get arrested and serve time. She is instructing kids to violate several laws. If any kid actually does this I hope the parents, schools and police in the area sue her and bankrupt her and her production company for such an idiotic video.

This is where I'm at right now. I JUST applied for my LTC after just taking the basic home safety course. My wife is dead set against guns in the house. I told her I was not getting one until I can properly store it in a safe. She and I feel better about that decision. I remember how "nosy" I was as a kid and I would never live with myself if anything happened to my son.

We were taught at a young age about gun safety, my wife's family were heavily involved in the local BB gun team (Joplin had the top team in the nation for years) and they were really serious about gun safety. By the age of 11 I had fired a fully automatic weapon. Briefly, at a range with several adults supervising. Also shot skeet that day for the first time and surprised my dad and uncle because I was hitting about 7 or 8 out of ten every time.

That said, we didn't have access to guns at our house. I had lots of friends that did and any time someone suggested doing anything sneaky with their parent's guns I'd shut it right down. About the most we ever did was take some .22 rifles out to the chat piles and plink.

I think it is very irresponsible to have guns stored in drawers or closets where kids can get to them. I don't have kids, but when there are some here I make sure there's nothing they can accidentally find.

Oh, and that video is a steaming pile of excrement. Especially enjoy the last part where they encourage kids to turn in their parents. How Stalineque.

Most of the folks on here know how adamantly I support the 2nd Amendment, and I'm a strong advocate of lawful individual carry, provided the individual is ok with accepting the responsibility.

Most would be surprised to learn that prior to 2006, I wouldn't have a loaded gun in my house. And I live alone.

The difference was being in a situation where I felt I was very close to being attacked, and unable to defend myself without a firearm.

There are several types of safes that can be instantly opened without having to remember combinations or be able to punch them in correctly.

Guns in our family were stored above the kid's heads until we all (my sister included) taught what they were and how to handle them safely. We all went out as a family and learned both long gun and pistol handling, safety and shooting. Never had any stigma attached to guns or hunting... and never any "issues" with accidents or mishandling in our house. We have no children, but my brother and sister both do. Their children also got the instruction and no one in any of our households needs to lock the guns away from the kids because they know what to do; and not do.
