Id like to hope there is a God, an almighty being that has a plan for us.

I feel like, if you read the bible, and interpret the stories within on your own, and believe aht you think they mean, and worship how you best can, that you have a better chance of making the right decisions in life, vs someone who feels like there is no higher power, its all lies, that they control their own destiny and the destiny of those surrounding them....

Im not a fan of organized religion, namely mega churches..revivals, faith healers, I think they have strayed far and away from what was originally intended for holy worship....its not a fashion show, its not a dating opportunity, its not a car show or contain a hierarchy of status within the congregation...Churches should not "make a profit"....and Preachers should not parade around in Mercedes, wearing 2000 dollar suits, and diamonds that would make a Jeweler shit their pants....

anyways....the lady in the OP is just another one of those people that id like ot slam their face in a car door...
Holy SHIT! I guess we may have something in common after all. Pretty much the exact same thing I have said since I was able to think for myself

It's actually difficult to decide which side of this argument is more annoying.

Here's an idea... if you believe in a God, whatever God that may be, great. Good for you. If you don't, great. Stop thinking you are somehow superior to everybody who doesn't share the same beliefs and stop trying to force whatever those beliefs are on everybody else.

There is no single religion that encompasses a majority of people's beliefs throughout history. What does that mean? it means quite simply that as sure as you are in your beliefs, the majority of the people who have ever taken a breath are/were just as certain that you are wrong.

and another idea, apply the same shit to everything in life. politics, being gay, being straight, being single, married, with kids, without kids, etc etc et****ingc...

if the ****ing population of this world would just mind their own ****ing business, we would all get along much better.

From what I can tell, the predominant attitude about "tolerance" seems to be, "you have to be tolerant of me, but I don't have to be tolerant of you."

I'm an Atheist and I don't spend any time obsessing about other people's religions. In fact, I'm quite happy to live in a country where they are free to practice them. Churches can be an important part of any community. There are more important things to worry about in this world than what or who people choose to worship.

I don't like it when they come knock on my door, but I am not rude to them and politely tell them I am not interested.

How stupid do you have to be to think we live in a God-obsessed culture?

Yet another example of why atheists get a bad wrap - far too many are insufferable, smug pricks who aren't 1/2 as smart as they think they are.

STFU.

The author sounds like a person who, eating Thanksgiving dinner at a friend's house, would make a scene about saying prayer before digging in. I'm not religious (I hesitate to say I'm an atheist, I'm simply not religious and don't go for any sort of organized religion) but I'll happily bow my head if someone wants to say a prayer, and apparently saying the Pledge of Allegiance the 1000 times or so I said it as a kid didn't kill me.

What looks like a church, acts like a church but isn’t a church? A congregation of spiritual humanists.
i.e. Church.

Quote:
My daughters have also attended Sunday School at WES and (like most parents there) my partner and I have taught our kids and others in class
Ah, choose Sunday to differentiate from religion, good job.

Quote:
But God wormed his way into my children’s lives anyway.
Because you choose to parallel everything you do with religious practices, minus god. So they're not left out.

Quote:
where my kids have been required to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the flag every day, a ritual I find nauseating both for its nationalism and its invocation of God.
Where do they still do this? I had to check the article date, it stopped when I was growing up and I'm 40.

Quote:
Instead of Valentine’s Day, we have Pay Attention to Love Day.
Mimic religion, sort of, can't mess with a commercial holiday.

Quote:
We hold a humanist seder at Passover and celebrate Spring Festival in place of Easter.
Because the best way to teach you children there is no God is to have replacement holidays.

Quote:
“Stone Soup” is our Thanksgiving and Winter Festival is our end of year holiday.
Because a holiday that has nothing to do with God should be replaced as well.

Quote:
But God wormed his way into my children’s lives anyway.
Because you essentially created a religion, not a God-less lifestyle.

I believe in God, not religion. I was raised Catholic, but would never claim it. I believe in God because of many nights I stared at the stars and wondered how it all was possible. Read things about the "edge of the universe". Wrote a poem in high school called "There isn't nothing anywhere" based on the fact that our universe doesn't end. Or does it? What's past the end if it does? Nothing? Are we just a few lucky life forms among millions of planets that got lucky and evolved?

I have no problem with atheism. I myself think what if there is no God? What happens when I die?

Then I think, I don't know. Every night I go to sleep. Maybe 8 hours goes by. I'm unaware of those 8 hours, other than maybe a period of dream. I could never have waken up. Maybe that's death. No good. No bad. You just don't know. None of us could.

But this article, if I was atheist, would make me be embarrassed to be an atheist.

I was also raised Catholic, and I would and do claim it. Yes, we've got our fair share of issues. OK, we've got enough baggage to fill the Grand Canyon. Twice.

Inspite of all this, I can't ditch my faith. Stupid? Maybe, but it is what it is.
