New hip scheduled for 2/13
Can't wait to get beyond the pain that I've endured for a full year now, but one downside is I can't bend over past 90 degrees (sitting position) for 3 full months. That means that when the new engine comes for the '08 Z, it's gonna sit for awhile before I can swap it in.
Since surgery is scheduled, I could not receive a fresh cortisone shot, so I get to be a complete gimp for another 30 days. |

Piece of cake. Felt better in 3 days. Paid attention to both the "rules" and how I felt. 3 months ,90 degrees? NFW. Walker after a couple days? Nah (except if you need to piss and are hurrying, then use it!). Don't put excess side torque on it as that's where it's weakest. If you actually lift with your legs and not your back you'll be fine. Old folks and those with poor leg muscles will put a huge lever on their hip through their back and upper body and have a bad day.

On a serious note, but I expect you've already done this...
Find out EXACTLY what the prosthetic will be, brand, style, model, material, etc. and you can then speak about your doc's experience with the specific prosthetic, as well as research how successful the specific prosthetic is. They seem to advance yearly, but the interwebs are pretty good at keeping up with the news. |

No biggie, I had both replaced 4 yrs ago. The pain level afterwards is sort of like the dentist. You have a nasty mind numbing toothache and you wish for someone to knock you out cold.....Afterwards it is more like a soothing ache that you can deal with.
If you have a favorite chair/couch, you may want to consider some lift blocks to raise it up a bit. If you're sitting and your knees are higher similar to a toilet, this is not a good move when trying to get up or sit down. You should have your thighs straight out and then lower leg going down as 90 degrees when sitting or going to stand up If you start twisting around to get up or down, there is a risk of it dislocating. This happened to a good friend of mine a year before I had mine. Like getting into a car the normal way sticking your right leg in and then sort of twisting on in? Bad move. Just open the door, sit down sideways and spin yourself around. Pick up several good size cold packs ahead of time. It'll also help you feel good. Don't "assume" since it is generally the mother of all fk ups. I remember the first couple days after I got home. I was using a cane for balance, hugging the walls for security. I was doing pretty good and bored and wanted to get out of the house for a while. So, the wife was against it but we went to Walmart. Thing is, at home, I was getting around but short distances and or up and down on the couch. We go into Walmart and I was dying before I got to the door. Baby stepping around the house was not even close to this. I sort of walked off somewhere. My wife and a employee we knew covered the entire store I guess & found me in the auto center sitting in a chair. She went and brought the car around and took me home. Just pace yourself during recovery |

Good luck Craig. I know a number of people who have had this procedure and it is a lot easier to recuperate than a knee replacement. All have been up and about in short order

Good luck datawiz.
I really feel lucky -- at 73 my hips and knees are fine. My dad had both knees replaced by the time he was my age. But that doesn't mean I don't have other issues. |
