The 6th Armed Service, United States Space Force, USSF.

The United States Space Force (USSF) is the space operations service branch of the U.S. Armed Forces, and is one of the eight U.S. uniformed services. It is the sixth branch of the U.S. military, and the first new armed service since the establishment of the independent U.S. Air Force in 1947.

It is organized as a military service branch within the Department of the Air Force, one of the three military departments within the Department of Defense. The Space Force, through the Department of the Air Force, is headed by the Secretary of the Air Force, who reports to the Secretary of Defense, and is appointed by the President with Senate confirmation.

The most senior Space Force officer is the Chief of Space Operations, unless a Space Force officer also serves as either the chairman or vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The Chief of Space Operations exercises supervision over the Space Force's units and serve as one of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. Certain Space Force components will be assigned, as directed by the Secretary of Defense and Secretary of the Air Force, to unified combatant commands.

Combatant commanders will be delegated operational authority of the forces assigned to them, while the Secretary of the Air Force and the Chief of Space Operations will retain administrative authority over their members.

I think most who are currently in the USAF Space Command will lateral over to the USSF, I don't believe there will be a recruitment drive. Uniforms and insignia may change a bit. A morale booster for the services, ehh, remains to be seen.

Huh? What are you talking about? Under Obama, NASA had it's most important mission.....Muslim outreach. Think about it.....trying to make Muslims feel better about themselves to keep them from blowing up stuff and committing mass murders. Think of how many American lives might have beensaved pacifying the Muslims!

Trump just wants to do unimportant stuff like go back to the Moon and then on to Mars. Pffft. Obama showed REAL leadership.

Edit: On a serious note, I met a young snowflake who is a contractor for NASA here in H-Town. She sews the space suits for the astronauts. She was obviously anti-Trump, and said she didn't see the need to go back to the moon, and doubted we would have boots on Mars by the time Trump leaves office in 2025.

It's strange that someone whose literal livelihood depends on government funding is so adverse to the guy who is doing more for the program that funds her own livelihood.

I'm reading about the need to build a headquarters (since our government is definitely short on buildings and office space, I'm sure). That will take about $72,000,000 of our tax dollars to get started in FY2020. 200 staffers.

That expense is estimated to ramp to about $500,000,000 per year over 5 years, per the link. So figure about 2,000,000,000 if typical government cost creep happens, as it always does.

The main thing we need to do is to develop the "Star Wars" tech Reagan envisioned. We need a Goldeneye type satellite that will target a laser beam to destroy whatever we need destroyed on the ground, and can also be used to target wayward meteorites or hostile aliens. Having a couple of death stars would be pretty handy, too. Better safe than sorry.

In talking with a "retired" friend about this move, he has a different opinion. When absolutely sober he wont even discuss. When drunk, I can get low level statements like, if the public even knew what is out there.....then he clams up. In reading between the lines, my take is that there is already plenty of action in this arena, and the money is part of the "discretionary spending" and this simply legitimizes it and allows it to become a line item in the budget.
