Default Dog Digestive Experts....Step In

Turbo typically vomits once, maybe twice a month. He's been doing this since I got when he was 6 weeks old.

He's been on the same diet (Rachel Ray's dry dog food) & bottled water since.

The past two months he's been vomiting ~2 days per week.

I tried giving him pumpkin to settle his stomach as I've done in the past but he refused to eat it.

He woke me up this morning at 5am to go outside as he had diarrhea.

I called the vet to go in....They're booked solid for 2 weeks.
I talked her into an appointment Monday afternoon.

She recommended I feed him rice & plain boiled chicken.
He's never had human food before.

It’s often good advice to hold back from feeding for a day perhaps then introduce mild foods like plain boiled white rice then step up to adding the chicken protein. If the vomiting continues there could be an obstruction? I’m not a fan of Rachelle‘s foods….

Pumpkin is human food
Rice and boiled chicken is typical recommendation
Rachel Ray dog food is probably garbage, a quick google shows claims of causing kidney failure

Do the rice and chicken and monitor, try to rule out a stomach blockage

We always keep chicken and rice for our dogs. Boil the chicken with no seasonings and plain white rice. Vacuum seal what you don’t use for the next episode.

Had the same thing with a Shar-Pei. There are many dried dog food made with chicken and rice. We found that lamb and rice was best for him and took care of the dry skin as well.

We’ve had several Collies, a GSD, and a Sheltie over the years. All of them have had upset stomachs periodically. It kinda looks like a yellowish, frothy fluid. Our vet says this is bile and is due to them having no food in their stomach. We now feed our dogs in the morning, afternoon, and a snack before bed. They still get an upset tummy but seems less often. We do use the chicken/rice or hamburger/rice diet for diarrhea and if it doesn’t clear up in a few days they go to the vet.

That dog food is junk, it was quality when came out years ago then as usual company was bought out.
My Noki got pesticide poisoning from it, almost killed him(it actually did shorten his life as kidney was badly damaged). Took 3 to 4 months for him to recover mostly.

Rice n chicken time. Pumpkin is ok in small quantities.
Bear has a touchy stomach and a dab o pumpkin helps when having a bad time.

I made Noki's food for the rest of his life.

Currently use Nutro branded kibble.

Your dog may also have a sensitivity to whatever is in the food(Bears is chciken but only processed chicken) so he gets beef or salmon.

We feed twice a day and a combo raw (beef ,beef organs, chicken organs and chicken backs, necks or feet) and Merrill kibble with grains. We used to go non grain until our vet said to change to grain.
It is extremely rare for our dogs to have any digestive issues.

You nailed it!!
Wifey does this for both current dogs, and did so for George-IWSYOD!!
Works perfectly everytime, like magic!!

Also, try to use only purified water, or filtered tap water, there are many issues with spring water.

GOOD LUCK!!

Rice and chicken is a good call. Follow what your vet recommends. Glad you are able to get him in sooner and hopefully it'll resolve.

Clearly you've got a chronic issue, not an acute one, if this has been going on since he's a pup. A bland diet is not likely to be the fix.

A prescription Hypoallergenic diet trial (Purina HA, Hills Z/D, others) would be worth considering for 2-3 months.

Also, it may be worth having cortisol levels checked, to rule out Atypical Addison's disease, which can be difficult to find unless you're looking for it.

This is all ASSuming you've already ruled out intestinal parasites and any possibility of foreign object ingestion.

Ivermectin is good for that, too.

My concern is, this combo of throwing up and diarrhea will dehydrate the dog, exacerbating whatever is actually wrong. If it was me, I'd bite the bullet and find an emergency vet. You'll probably drop a couple grand, but they'll observe and test the dog for everything, and you'll have your answer, you'll know what the problem is.

Barring that, maybe try and find another vet willing to see you as a walk in. The vet I used most recently took walk ins, but you'd have to basically come in, check in in person, then sit out in the parking lot. It might take 2-3 hours, but I was seen every time I did that. Good luck, and keep us posted.

I'm with Bill, I just take the dog to vet and wait. That 2 to 3 weeks isn't going to cut it and by then it's either cleared or bad shit has happened.

Ivermectin is far from an ideal dewormer for dogs. There are many safer, more effective choices. Besides, with a chronic condition it sure would be nice to diagnose the problem rather than to shotgun treatment and never know what the issue was.

Start feeding him that peanut butter from an actual spoon.

I'd do the chicken and rice diet until your vet appt and see what she says.

And don't use it for Covid either!

I wouldn't eat anything associated with Rachel Ray & I wouldn't feed it to my dog either.

My doggo gets Fromm dog food as her staple, with some wet food or cooked meats on the weekend if I make anything for myself.

For vomiting and diarrhea, this is most often recommended by the vets we've gone to.

My family has had GSDs for well over a half century, and yes, I believe all of them have thrown up the yellow bile at least occasionally. This is why we generally feed them twice per day, instead of the usual once per day for most dogs. Miss Belle, the GSD I currently have, gets fed twice per day, but if I feed her too early in the evening, and don't get up early, she will occasionally do this when she goes out for first potty. This happening occasionally is really no big deal, but since I am sure it is uncomfortable for her, I try to avoid it.

Rice, and other foods with a high carbohydrate content, will tend to stop diarrhea, but if the dog hasn't had it before, watch them carefully after their first time eating it. Rice can be very binding for some dogs, and overdoing it can give you the opposite problem.

I give Belle ground beef, and baked chicken, along with "Pet Smart" food. I am thinking of cutting down the amount of Pet Smart, as it has a significant amount of rice in it, and I think she struggles too much sometimes to drop deuces.

I know nothing about Rachel Ray's food, but other dog owners with sensitive stomach problems have raved about "The Farmer's Dog" food. I've never tried it, but not being thrilled with the Pet Smart, I am thinking of looking into it myself.

Good luck!
