I grew up in Fort Lauderdale, and went to spring break in mid-80s, good times, very little violence.
The city did away with it as they felt they would benefit greater from 'family tourism'.
Of course the booming cruise line industry with Port Everglades as a focal point provided much more hotel room demand that a month of spring breakers ever could.

South Beach IS NOT SPRING BREAK, very few college students pick it as a travel destination for spring break, some do.
BUT the overwhelming amount of people there this week are there for the Ultra Music Festival.
If South Beach wants to haver a safer demographic they simply need to cancel the contract with Ultra, which they will not do, as it brings in hundreds of millions each year.

I enjoy South Beach, some of the best restaurants in THE USA outside of manhattan, with downtown Miami and the Heat Arena and Marlins Park less than five minutes away.
With that said, I avoid it during weeks like this, as each year there are always violent incidents.
