Osteen took criticism here in Houston because we had massive flooding, people were looking literally for refuge from the storm, and Lakewood didn't open their church up to those people....until the public outcry kind of shamed them into it. Keep in mind, their church is long term leased from the city of Houston, and is the former Summit, where the Houston Rockets played. In other words, they have lots of high-and-dry space.

In fairness, even if they wanted to help right away, they probably weren't prepared to actually take in a bunch of refugees. That requires some planning and time to mobilize.

Compare and contrast with a local furniture store, that took people in almost immediately, and had them literally sleeping on the furniture they had for sale (that they'd later have to sell as kind of used.)

Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of the prosperity doctrine, or Osteen, personally, but I don't begrudge him his success. His dad was a minster and had a small church in a former feed store in north Houston. Joel took over after his dad died, and built a mega-church. As I understand it, he doesn't take a salary from his church, instead, made his fortune with his self help books, tapes, etc. Lives in a mansion here in Houston.

I learned a lot from Nickey Gumble's Bible in one Year series. There's a link on the Get Started page to download the app for Android or iOS or you can access via the web.
Each day has passage from Psalms or Proverbs, then relevant passages from the New and Old Testaments. Gumble spends 10 minutes or so at the beginning discussing each days reading tying things together in ways I never understood before. The app displays the bible text which you can read, listen to, or both.

Five years ago I was about 6 weeks into the program when our family experienced a real tragedy that I'm not sure I'd have recovered from had it not been for this app. I just finished my second pass through it in 2022 and strongly recommend it. Best 20 minutes of my day.
By the way, no promises of prosperity and no "send your money and get a prayer cloth" stuff.

Are you looking to improve anything specific? If you do a detailed search on Amazon there are tons of great books.
