Default Water heaters

Ours is leaking. How do you turn off the water supply?

There should be a shut off valve. If not, you have to turn off the water for the house.

That's what I was afraid of. The water main is down the road. There are 4 houses that run off the same spot. No idea which is our house as it's a rental. Text sent to the landlord has not been responded to.

There's a shut off valve in the crawlspace or basement if there isn't a valve by the water heater

There's gotta be a shutoff somewhere. Try under the kitchen sink.

Isn't there a cut-off valve where the water pipe enters your house? And how bad is the leak? Is the drip pan/piping getting keeping up with the leak? If not, you'll have to hook up a hose and drain the whole thing.

There must be a whole house shut off valve.

On my house, there is a shutoff valve to the water heater supply, shutoff valve on my house, and shutoff from the city mainline at the end of my driveway. At the very least, you should have a shutoff to your house. Should be in the front?

If it is a big tank water heater, they can rust out and leak, shutting off the water won't do much for that.

That's true, too. Probably best to turn off the heat and drain it as soon as possible

It's lines coming straight out of the wall into the tank. Nothing on them to shut off the water. Just copper and plastic. It's rather stupid if you ask me. Plumber should be coming by at 10. If he's like the cable guy I should see him sometime next month.

There's got to be a main shut off to the house. Might be a good time to have your Plumber install a couple valves around your hot water heater while everything is down.

How any home owner or renter does not know where the main water shut off is is beyond my comprehension.
A little detective work and you'll find it.
Hint... It's along the wall that the street is on or very close to that on the side wall.
Have the plumber show you where it is.
Your landlord is an idiot for :
#1) not tootling you on the mechanicals when you rented the place, and
#2) not valving every possible water line.

This. Exactly this. Might also consider putting in a whole house shut off, if there isn't one currently.

Not installing valves around fixtures and components isn't uncommon. If I told you how may times I had to kill service to an entire building to fix some stupid piece of equipment like a heat exchanger you'd never believe it. I've done a lot of freeze seals over the years too where shutting down a building just isn't possible.

If I want to turn the water supply off here all I have to do is cut the rope off of the bucket.

The whole house shutoff is down the drive past other rentals. I think there should be one at the house.

Doing those kinds of things costs time and money. The landlard has important things to do such as sitting and doing nothing. Further, the cost of a putting a five dollar emergency shut off valve on a water heater that costs in the thousands just doesn't make short term sense either.
