I said goodbye to it three seconds after my last final. When used in my engineering courses, I skipped those problems or figured out another way to do them. Of all the engineers that I have known in my 40 year career, only one ever used it, and he was Chinese -American.

The conclusion I get from this discussion is the person who writes an equation in this manner is most likely a woman. To no avail , I keep telling my daughter to be specific.

As a programmer, I would never leave my code to interpretation; parentheses is your friend. And yes, I commented my code (MSSQL interfaces) very well even though it was clean and self explanatory. I received only one call after retiring which had to do with Active Directory changes breaking permissions.

I stand by my answer of 4. lol

Excellent post, Dude.

Totally wrong. When I worked as a Chemical Engineer, I used calculus regularly. There were those who tried to avoid it, and they were considered dumbasses.

I didn’t avoid it, it was just never necessary.

Equation is ****ed up... however, ChatGPT and Bing disagree

ChatGPT sez:

The expression 60 / 5(1 + 1(1 + 1)) can be simplified as follows:

First, evaluate the expression inside the innermost parentheses:

(1 + 1(1 + 1) = 1 + 1 \cdot 2 = 3).
Next, multiply the result by 5:

(5 \cdot 3 = 15).
Finally, divide 60 by the product:

(60 / 15 = 4).
Therefore, the answer to the expression is 4.

Is totally wrong; and an inability to spell "masturbation" correctly doesn't help your case.

After I argued with ChatGPT for a bit, it came up with the correct answer.

Looks like Bing manipulated the equation by putting parenthesis around 60/5 in its calculation

Multiplication and division should be evaluated from left to right

If this was written on paper using a dividing line then there would be no ambiguity which is numerator and denominator.
When using computer text, any expression meant to be the whole denominator will get parenthesis to make it clear.
a/xy is never interpreted as a/(xy) as that is a completely different expression
a/(xy) is not equal to a/x(y) which is the mistake people with boners for the P make
