Wifes Daughter in jail!

Got a call at 2:30 this morning, stepdaughter in jail for OUIL.

Oh well, if you play you pay. Hopefully she will learn something from this. The sad thing about it is that she is 21 and doesn't have any money so my wife will feel obligated to get an attorney for her etc. I guess I'm insensitive and a bit selfish as I don't see why this should be our problem but I'll just keep quiet for now and see what happens.

In Michigan they call it OWI or OUIL. And yes if it's the wifes problem it's my problem too which means the wife will do what she want's and I will deal with it. I can't really complain too much because the wife makes much more $$ than I do so it is what it is.

Don't you just get a summons and the car impounded, didn't think you actually got arrested and haulled off to jail.

I don't know the backstory but I do know that if one of my kids was in trouble, it would be damn near impossible to turn my back on them. That said, your wife should probably find a way to make your daughter reimburse her (you) for the charges and prove that a lesson was learned here.

I'd also make it clear that it would be the LAST time help like this would be forthcoming.

If it's a solid case (poor driving observed by officer, failed sobriety tests), I probably wouldn't bother with a lawyer. They have a rather poor success rate with OWI unless the case has obvious technicalities (ie; like not actually getting caught behind the wheel).

If it's her first, just plead guilty and take the medicine. Lawyer probably won't be of much help, judges and DAs aren't known to bargain much with this crime.

MI penalties appear to be similar to WI...For a 1st, expect 6 mo license suspension, probation, and a hefty fine. Hopefully she learns from this one, the next will have a much steeper penalty.

IF you really want to help her - insist she deal with the alcohol issue. Believe it or not, most people don't get picked up for DWI or OWI or whatever you call it.

Bail her out and get her into rehab.

What City? Your wife could always hire Pete Decker....you may have to sell the house, work tons of OT, refinance the house, but his firm is one of the best in the area....Good 'ol "Uncle Pete"

Just because you get pulled over for a DUI, that doesn't mean you have an alcohol problem, you can have 2 glasses of wine and blow a 24 hr suspension. What is boils down to is just plain old poor judgement.
