Default Thinking About Hanging Them Up.......

.......car show rags that is.......

Over the years, after 175 car shows, 120 various wins, I think it's about time I hang them up. Participating in various local, regional and a few prominent Corvette shows on the East Coast, I think I'm pretty much done, kind of a "been there, done that" many, many times.

This weekend's Corvette Weekend in Ocean City, MD, one of the largest regional Corvette shows, has culminated to me, I don't need anymore car shows, "it don't get any better". I feel very fortunate that I've been recognized by my peers for my efforts on my presentation that I captured a C7 class award this weekend, plus....which floored me, GM Best Of Show.

For me, I've pretty much reached the pinnacle of car show awards by winning that final prize at that venue. I really don't have desire to win anymore, I'm going to start being a spectator, may even offer an award provided by me to a deserving participant. We'll see how that plays out.

Congratulations on the award. Well deserved.

It took me three years and 34 car shows with 19 first-in-class awards to burn out. I still like judging shows, and I do some local hot rod shows now and then. And I still attend a regional Corvette show now and then to hook up with some of the people I met doing shows. For me it was all about meeting people and making friends. For that matter, that's what Corvette ownership was all about.

I personally thank all the waxers I see. If not for them, us track guys would never have a mass produced sports car like the Corvette.

So congrats on your awards. Keep encouraging others to buy Corvettes.

Ditto.

I paid full price for my '08 Z06 when I bought it brand new, and paid half of that for a 26k 3LZ '09 Z06 well cared for by a waxer. It's my new garage queen. I don't mind having a waxer car when I have a racer car, but I'll pick racing over waxing every time.

The Corvette shows here do have a competition class, so you could do both. Many do.

I don't have the patience to sit at a car show. When my sponsor has a car show, I just drop off the race car and pick it up at the end of the day. No trophy yet.

I stopped participating in car shows when I won my 2nd First Place award.

I like walking around looking at other cars much more than sitting in a chair in front of my own car.

Well, that counts as participating. Good for you, and I'm sure your sponsor appreciates the exposure.

Plenty of time to do both at any car show.

I have entered the shows, but not to compete in any way.

Why?

I don't want to park next to the porta-potties, huge propane tank, the DJ speakers, or in the mud. Lately, the local groups are charging an additional fee to be in the judged area, I don't have any problem paying for the better parking.

You never know when the judges show up and they have questions.

Or when they show up again to determine a special award or to make a tiebreaker decision.

At the Western States Corvette Council shows where I used to show and judge, the judges do not speak to the owners. At the ISCA (International Show Car Association) shows I participated in during the 70s, if you said hello to a judge, you were disqualified. At Concours shows I have been to and judged, it's quite different. They are interested in functionality of the car, so there is much interaction between the judges and owners. They want you to start the car, open the trunk, show all safety equipment, such as the spare tire and jack, etc.

So not all shows are alike, I suppose.

In the two shows I won first place, the judges asked questions and listened to comments I had. In at least one of them I know that my interaction helped them steer their decision to my car.

Originality was what they were going for in both cases.

As a judge, I think tipping should be encouraged.
